They are not actually competing against each other. Figure skaters choose their own routines, which are different from the routines of others. How is this supposed to be measured? A panel of judges who are applying their subjective judgements? Ridiculous.
When an athlete runs faster than his competitors, jumps farther than his competitors, or when one team of athletes defeats another team in hockey, basketball, etc- these things are not open to interpretation and the opinions and feelings of individuals. Either you win, or you don't. All the rest of it is fine outside of the Olympics, but I can't take it seriously when Suzy Ice Skater gets the Gold for not falling on the ice.
