As a child growing up in eastern Iowa in the early 60's.

I used to hear
" There are many more good people than bad people"

Almost every week.

I'am wondering if that is still true .

Question:
In your opinion,
Just what is the ratio today ?
Educated people, uneducated people,
Blue collar, white collar, young, old, legal citizens, undocumented,
Military, religious
Cops, teachers,
Everybody.

Choices:
Far more very good people than bad people
More good people than bad people
Many more questionable people than good or bad
It's right at a 50-50 split, good to bad
More bad people than good
Many more bad people than goid
If it were not for SigForum ,I would not know where to find good people
I live in America because of the good people

Good people rarely make the news as it doesn't put butts in seats. If it bleeds it leads is the news' mantra so unwise to form your opinion based on a source like that.

Also, "good" has a highly variable definition.
  • You can be a good person but uneducated. You can have multiple degrees and be a piece of shit.
  • You can be an executive but beat your wife when you get home. You can have the most menial job in the world but come home and treat your wife like a treasure.
  • You can have a career in the most noble of professions but be one of the 3% committing criminal acts. You can have a career in one of the sleaziest professions (e.g. politician) but be one of the rare ones with pure motives and actions.
  • You can swear and be a good person. You can never curse but be a con man who steals people's life savings.
  • You can be born in the US and be a sociopath. You can be born in another country, taken across the border by your parents, and be the second coming of Mother Teresa.

I believe the definition of "good" person has to judge both the content of their character and their actions. In my circle, good people inordinately outnumber bad people, and that's because of a lifelong series of intentional choices.

More good people, but the bad people aren't being dealt with, so they are allowed to escalate their bad behavior.

The issue isn't really good or bad...people are just people. Humans. Humans act in their self interest most of the time and are rarely truly benevolent.

The real issue in modern society is a lack of critical thinking, which is related to miseducation and a lack of personal responsibility. What many people consider to be "bad people" are really people who dont know the evils of socialism, communism and government control because they haven't been educated about them. These people also often don't want to take personal responsibility for their lives, so the idea appeals to them, and theres no one there to tell them why its so wrong and so bad.

Far more good than bad. It's just the bad we hear about, and the bad are really pretty awful.

Far more good than bad. Good news doesn’t sell.

I see and work with good people doing good things every day.

Many more good people than bad. What has gotten worse is that more people seem to seem to believe the absolute worst about people who have different views than themselves.

    Again more good than bad.
But the bad have become worse having been increasingly polluted by the corrupt MSM and Education system. And in turn many have been getting far too many "passes" by a two tiered justice system making bad actors not accountable for their actions. Witness the results of blue cities that more and more resemble third world shitholes.

I think there's more good than bad, however most people will take the path of least resistance should a confrontation or incident occur.

    * Two people get into an argument in public that continues to escalate, most people will want nothing to do with it or, stand from a distance watching. The easy excuse is I don't want to get caught-up and be apart of a possible legal case.

    * Seeing somebody collapse in the middle of the sidewalk, 1-2 people will render aid, meanwhile most people after seeing that there's already people helping, will convince themselves that there's nothing they can do and will carry-on, walking past. Others will just stand watching or, stare.

    * History has shown us that an over-bearing government, that slowly increases its tyranny while blaming others for their actions, people are more likely acquiesce than stand a confrontation. In the Russian revolution, after the White's were killed-imprisoned, the population as a whole largely rolled-over, not wanting to stand-up and deal with the bullies. The same thing happened in China, after all the Nationalists were killed or, escaped, the Commies under Mao, attempted to run a country... and the people suffered because they didn't have the stomach or, gumption to fight. Both incidents came on the heels of a major war so, the population was already bruised & vulnerable from conflict.

I voted more good than bad, but I am also aware that it is far more complicated than that in that good vs. bad depends very much on the particular situation being considered, and the perspective of the person making the judgement. Self-interest is a strong motivator, one cannot expect that it will always be enlightened self-interest.

Back in my day growing up 50s, 60s, 70s, we knew we could go to any adult for help if in trouble. Also a man's word and handshake meant something.

I can not say the same today.

I agree with this. I grew up in a rural area and when I hit my teens, around 1960, our main mode of transportation was to hitchhike. Adults were trusted. Not so much today.

Looking at our country as a whole, how do we even gauge who is good or bad? Elections? Probably not. I don't think you can gauge it by looking at your neighbors simply because you probably made a careful decision to live there because of the good people in the area.

I tell you, I honestly don't know how the scales would swing in this day and age. Frown
