This morning I was driving south on I-75 from Indiana. Somewhere around the Ky/Tn state line I passed under an overpass with two police cars on it, lights flashing and a giant American flag stretched between the two. After that it seemed like every overpass I went under had a police car or fire truck on it with the lights on. Several areas had police cars grouped on the Northbound side of the interstate. I didn’t have any idea what was going on until I got almost to Knoxville and the interstate became a parking lot. I was met by a wall of blue lights surrounding a hearse. It was probably the most beautiful, sad, and humbling sight I have seen in years. I just sat there with my hat in hand and tears running down my face until they passed. After I got home I looked it up and read about a Chattanooga Officer who has fallen in the line of duty. He was being carried home to Cincinnati to his final resting place. Rest in Peace Officer Nicholas Galinger.

Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.

Sad situation. The officer was struck and killed by a car during the hard rains that we have had lately in Chattanooga. He was outside of his patrol car checking a manhole that had water pouring out of it and the cover was off. The accident is under investigation by the police. At this point is pure conjecture that the driver of the car was either under the influence or was impaired. The fallen officer had just recently graduated from the academy.

I know the chief down there. He is a solid dude, a fantastic leader, and the rare example of an alpha who never changed after becoming chief. He has never been the classic big city politician. He is devastated by the loss of his officer.
