What will it take to kill a Grizzly Bear?

sigspecopsWhat will it take to kill a Grizzly Bear?
So you hear a noise, you turn to see what it is, and there's a fully grown Grizzzly 50 yards away. It's extremely agitated and begins to charge you. What weapon would you choose to deal with the bear? It must be a firearm, and it must be made to be wielded by one person. No belt fed machine guns, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, or flame throwers. Just some sort of shotgun, rifle or pistol.
Theres not much time, he's closing fast. What will it be?

tatortoddWhen I moved to Alaska a man on the Kenai Penninsula was charged by one and he killed it with his Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull. That is what I bought and carried while I lived in Alaska.
I only cleared leather once during all of my hiking, river fishing, and camping. It was for a wolverine and fortunately it scurried off without me having to use it.

MikeinNCThe CG used to provide the Polar icebreakers with a 375 H&H magnum rifle.
The user had to pass a basic marksmanship class (m16/m4) then the shooter had to shoot 5 rounds in one minute on a TranstarII target (people shaped target). The rifle was a Mauser.

As another data point, when they built the TransAlaska Pipeline the bear guards had 375 H&H magnum rifles.

Ed FowlerBack in the 1950's my cousin from NY came out west to visit family. He wanted to go for a walk in the mountains about 40 miles west of Denver. Thee was no laws concerning bears at that time.
Someone told him he should take a gun with him in case he came across a Grisly Bear. He decided that would be a good idea, he stopped at a sporting goods store and said he wanted a gun. He picked out a High Standard 22 RF. It was the first gun he ever held, never shot one or seen one except in the movies. He bought box of shells and the salesman taught him how to load it and he was on his way.
He walked up on a Grizzly rolling in a batch of Kin Knneick, aimed his piston and shot him right behind his skull and shot him, killing him instantly.
He walked back to town and told my father what he had done. My father laughed and said that was impossible. He replied "what is impossible I just did it, you shoot something i dies, everybody know that"!
My father asked to go with him and find out what he had shot. About a mile from town he took to his kill. It was a grizzly and it was dead. I had field dressed antelope and small game but this was my first bear, I was 14 and only had a pocket knife, and with him helping me we got it done.
Walked back to tow3n I told ,y father it was a big bear! He looked at all the blood and lets get in the jeep and see what we had been working on. Folks now and then said they had seen them, but no one believed them.
He tuned out to be record breaking Grizzly bear.
We got a friend and called the game warden and
out little home town news paper had a story to tell! It was good eating!
A charging bear would be a completely different story!!

MNSIGYou didn't say how far I needed to carry it, or for how long, so definitely a .375 H&H rifle. Why in the heck would anyone choose a pistol in this case?
