It's been surpassed by Toyota's Rav4. Some speculate it's because F150's have become too expensive, but Rav4's are too. Maybe finally the trend to drive pick-up trucks is starting to wane?

If you put GMC and Chevy together, their 1500 would beat the RAV4’s 475,000 by 85,000 and make the F150 3rd by 100,000 vehicles.

And if you combine Rav4 and CRV they top Ford F150 and Chevy Silverado combined.

The point being pick-ups finally seem to be loosing market share, abet slowly and this is just one year, but still.

I think the past few years for vehicles are an anomaly and will eventually be noted as such.

Vehicle production stopped in 2020 and then supply chain issues put everything on hold.

There was also a sudden surge in EV and plug-in hybrid (which would also encompass Rav4/CRV) purchases in 2021/2022 due to new people entering that market. Basically, if you were inclined to purchase that sort of vehicle, you did. But now that those purchases have been made they aren't selling anywhere near as strong.

The price of new pickups (or most vehicles for that matter) is utterly insane right now, along with interest rates for loans, making them unobtainable for typical pickup truck buyers. There also isn't the inventory that their typically is (we are still waiting on fleet purchases at work to arrive that were ordered back in 2022).

What does this mean?

The type of person that typically buys a truck isn't buying anything new right now. Rav4's and CRV's and similar vehicles are still being purchased because the cost is much less and the type of person that buys them occupy a different place in the market.

I think for the market to return to "normal," vehicle prices will have to decrease or consumer earning power will have to dramatically increase, and interest rates will have to decrease. Vehicle manufacturers will also need to produce vehicles and have inventory of what people actually want to buy, which isn't the current market condition.

I don't think any of this is going to occur for at least a year or two.

So basically, market statistics for the past five years needs an asterisk next to it.

When large American cars went the way of the Dodo, people just opted for the 4 door pickup. I look for some type of market resolution on expensive trucks this year. Something has to give, price wise.

Hmm, Grok says its still the F-150. And the numbers in the article aren't even close to what Grok says - 763,940 F-150's sold in 2024.

More to do with the crazy inflated prices that affect F150's more than the RAV4.

Also two different markets for these vehicles so comparison is difficult.

F150 prices are ridiculous. I bought a new F150 King Ranch in 2012. 9 yrs later, i traded it in for a Toyota 4Runner. No regrets at all. I LOVE my 4Runner.

The new F150s in 2021 were stupid expensive (same trim/options was $15-17,000 more in 2021 for the same truck). I made more money in 2021, but there was no way I was gonna spend that much on a new vehicle.

Truck prices need to come down, but I'm still not giving up my Toyota.

My niece drives a Toyota Rav4. She loves it.

The RAV4 is a Toyota while the CRV is a Honda. The GMC and Chevy are the same truck, built by the same manufacturer, on the same assembly lines.

Looking at the pickups in total, they sold more than last year and are inline with the total increase in CUV sales on the list. The big winners on the list are the Corolla and Civic with 20%+ gains. So out of curiosity, I decided to spec my own truck that I bought brand new custom-ordered from the factory in 2017, a F-150 with a 5.0 V8 in Lariat trim. I used the "Build Your Own" feature on Ford's website.

2017: $42,000 MSRP
2025: $69,065 MSRP

Mind you, I paid below that after the factory incentives and my interest rate on the loan was 1.5% (the best current APR is 5.9%). I still thought it was too high then. Looking back, I'm exceedingly glad I did it.

...also, mine didn't come with stupid stop/start and I had more options to add such as a 36 gallon fuel tank which aren't available now. The current 2025 model doesn't offer any improvement over my 2017. There has been absolutely zero innovation in the past eight years. The brand new model is essentially the same truck, just slightly worse with less options. That's just sad.

That my friends is why nobody is buying new trucks (or new vehicles in general).

In a car market with $35K Toyota Corollas, I shudder to think what a new F-150 costs. I haven't liked Ford trucks much since 1996, when the 9th generation with the bulletproof Windsor V8s (5.0 and 5.8) and 300 (4.9) straight six was discontinued.

Yep, that and plenty of people opted up for the higher trim packages during the FauciFaux era, consequently there are tons of vehicles out there that are way under water, combine it with higher prices and interest rates and it stalls sales.

I have, literally, put over a million miles on pickups. Most of that on Fords.

Over a few million miles, counting the ones at work.

The latest F350 we bought for work and the F150 are not great. The F350 has been a problem. The F150 just feels cramped and awkward to drive.

Nothing lasts forever. Pretty shocking the number of 1500's that GM is moving. Everyone I know that has a Rav4 loves the thing.

I like big trucks for their capability and small cars for their nimbleness and agility. The stuff in between is just blah. My current personal vehicles are a 3/4 ton Silverado, a half-ton Suburban, and a Mazda 3. I drive the truck for truck things, the Suburban for road trips or when we need to take everybody somewhere at once, and the Mazda for everything else.

My brother has a RAV4. My BIL has a CRV and a Terrain. My parents own not one, but TWO, Chevy Equinoxes. They're all boring, soulless appliances. Not big enough to haul anything useful, not small enough to get great fuel economy or have decent handling, and not powerful enough to have any fun. It's the modern equivalent of a minivan...for people who have given up on the joy of driving and are just focused on moving kids around. I hate the whole genre and wish the concept would just die.

Oh, and for the record I have caught runners in a Maserati with a Ford Explorer, a BMW 3-series with a Dodge Durango, and a VW New Beetle with a Chevy Tahoe, so the big boys can play too if you know how to handle them!
