tigereye313Suggestions on where to stay- Big Island Hawaii
We had booked a VRBO that was recommended here years ago, but it appears the owners are retiring and selling the property. So now we are needing to find somewhere else to stay.
It is just me, Mrs, and surly teenager and we would prefer something small, and not in a resort unless it were a screaming good deal. Thanks in advance!

GustoferI stayed at the Fairmont Orchid once and it was pretty nice. No idea what the price was as it wasn't on my dime, but I don't think it was exorbitant.
My only recommendation is that unless you like moonscape scenery, look for something on the east side. I don't care to go back to the Big Island as it didn't do much for me, but if I did, that is where I would stay.

4MUL8RIn 1992 I stayed at a bed and breakfast on the eastern side of Hawaii, at a home where the movie Black Widow was filmed. You could try to find unusual properties like that for fun, but you'd have to use modern brokers like VRBO.

It's unfortunately much more exorbitanter than we were thinking. Lovely, but, exorbitanter.

OregonThere's a little town on the NW tip called Hawi. It's about an hour North of Kona. If you're looking to get away from people and enjoy the views, I'd check by there. It's not super convenient, but you can save money by doing most of your shopping at the Kona Safeway or Costco before you get there.

I do think Mrs found a spot in that area that we are looking into.

tigereye313Resolved. The feller we are renting a jeep from had a referral for a nice place to stay for about the same $ as our previous reservation.
