So I am rural here in my beloved Central Virginia, and our neighborhood has 0 infrastructure. No cable, no DSL, no POTS. So the only option for us to have Broadband Internet is through 4GLTE.

Last night our modem went down. I can log into it and watch it scan the tower and various frequencies. It will hit one and then a few seconds later it is off.

However, It is a Verizon SIM card in the modem. I call the company (Ubifi, not Verizon) and they tell me that Verizon reports the tower is down for maintenance. But you see my smartphone plans are with Verizon, and my Samsung Note 20 sees the Verizon 4GLTE tower just fine. The tech said that Verizon has us on either a different tower for the 'package' that we use or they have just shut down this 'product' but actual cell phones have to be allowed to stay on by federal law so they cannot disable them by law.

I do know that AT&T shutting down 3G is really upsetting a lot of systems as well. So I do not know if this is related to 3G (I haven't been able to find out if Verizon also shut down their 3G).

IN summary my Verizon 4GLTE modem is not able to see the tower and I am told it is 'down for maintenance.'
My Verizon phone still see that tower just fine.

Is this plausible? That the two devices are using the same tower but because they are two 'types' of accounts one can be shutdown to allow for maintenance?

I can’t answer your question but I had 4g internet for a while until the company went tits up and just shutdown without notice. I don’t know about ubifi but a lot of these companies are giving unlimited data but Verizon and others don’t actually offer that type of plan.

I’m any case if you don’t have any luck look up T-Mobile Home Internet. They had a legit unlimited plan for like $50/month. It worked well. They are also offering 5g when it comes available.

These go to eleven.

Is there some compelling reason you went with a reseller, rather than just get a data-only plan with Verizon?

Admittedly, this is probably not useful to you, but, years ago I just happened to catch a T-Mobile advert on the radio where they were doing a free additional line for existing qualifying customers.

As luck would have it: I was right across the street from a TMO store. Went in and, sure enough, that free line could be a data-only plan. Bought the appropriate SIM, ordered a NetGear 4G LTE modem, plugged in the SIM, and away I went.

I use it for a backup Internet connection, for the rare occasions our Comcast Internet connection goes down.

Yep, look into T-Mobile, I initially got it as a failover but also due to higher upload speeds.

Obviously, this is only going to work if your area has TM coverage.
As frayedends said, $50/month, no setup fee, no contract, unlimited. My speeds vary throughout the day - anywhere from 20-200 down and 20-80 up.

The only thing I don't like about TM is their customer service, it's worse than Comcast.

I honestly cant say why I do not have AT&T at home or Verizon @ home or T-Mobile at home. Neither can they. But if they put in my address it says, "not available . .. please fill out this form and we will notify you when it is" In seven years, nada. The theory that I have is that our 'area' is listed as covered by FIOS, DSL and Shentel Cable respectively. But our neighborhood is not so they have us locked out so that we will use a product we cant buy.

This is why I had to purchase from a 3rd party reseller.

Since your phones work, turn on the hot spot access on your cell phone and use it for your internet access until you resolve the problem with the current carrier, or, you should be able to get a verizon hot spot on your cell plan and use it for broadband access.

https://www.verizon.com/internet-devices/

The top of the Ubifi page has a link for customers experiencing problems with connectivity, of course, if you can't connect, you can't see the link

https://www.ubifi.net/changing...or-your-mofi-router/

It States

Changing the Access Point (APN) for your MoFi Router

Please follow the directions below to update the APN for your MoFi Router:

With a device connected to the MoFi(over WiFi or ethernet), launch a web browser (Internet explorer, Firefox, or Safari preferred) and go to 192.168.10.1.

Login to the admin panel with your router password (maybe different than your WiFi password). The default password is ‘admin‘.

Once logged in, click on ‘MoFi Internal Modem‘ on the left sidebar menu

For the field titled ‘Country/Custom APN‘, select ‘UNITED STATES‘ from the corresponding dropdown.

For the field titled ‘Access point (APN)‘, select ‘AT&T (USA) (Broadband)’from the corresponding dropdown.

Click Save on the bottom right of the page and wait for the changes to be applied.

Once changes have been applied, please reboot your MoFi Gateway by disconnecting it from power and re-connecting it 10 seconds later.

Please allow up to 24 hours for your connection to restore to normal after making these changes.

Everyone is ditching 3G but not at the same time. I want to say Verizon is planning to shut it off early summer and T-Mobile by the end of the year. But I may have that backwards.

Its possible you have a bad sim. I work for Panasonic repairing toughbooks. Its a pain trying to get the customer to understand that the modem is fine and its their sim that is bad.

Try swapping the sim out of your phone with the hotspot for the house to verify its working. The sim in your phone may be a micro or nano sim and the hotspot unit will probably be full size but you can get adapters for dirt cheap on amazon.

Thanks HRK,

Yeah my wife and I both have unlimited plans on our phones that allow us to use the phone as a hotspot. But no matter what they claim, the plan is limited to 15gb of hotspot data. But that is what we are doing until the system is restored.

The hotfix they have posted is for the AT&T plans (their shutdown of the 3G towers yesterday is causing them problems).

My wife is coming into town and I is bringing it by my office so I am going to try it from here. we will see.

I tried that last night. The modem uses a bigger sim card than my phone, so I need an adapter. I plan to dig through my bin of mobile device crap to see if I have an one.

It's entirely plausible. The modem is likely using different bands (frequencies) than your phone. There are multiple on every 'tower'. I'd bet the modem has fewer bands vs your phone, and I'd bet Verizon wants the modem on the lower-performance tier of bands.
If it's not back in a day or 3, I'd pursue further, but Ubifi is entirely at the mercy of Verizon based on the information given.

So I took the modem to work (which is another county). SAME issue.

I found a SIM shuttle so I could try my Samsung SIM. You guessed it, the same issue. ( I tried this also while at work and again, at home).

At this point the only thing that has not been tried is another 4gLTE modem (I only have the one). According to Ubifi, the tower maintenance is scheduled to be completed on Saturday at 10am.

[rant] My dad who lives downtown in a 50's frame house in Lynchburg, pays $30 a month of unlimited 500mbs service. He has companies competing trying to get his business. I pay $130 a month for this 15mbs bullcrap. It is really is frustrating. [/rant]

While talking on the phone with DSGrouse (thanks for taking the time, it is appreciated) we reset the APN to be VZWireless. and it started working.

For awhile. Then the modem reset back to just saying "Broadband" for the APN and stopped working. That is when I cussed in front of my 11 year old and she told on me.

Then an hour later, it started working again. yep, it still says the default "broadband" for the APN. It stopped for awhile again, and changing it back to USA (region) and Verizon (carrier APN) and it started working and then some moments later it switches back to "broadband" which is not supposed to work.

I keep telling myself, this makes no sense, this isnt how this works. . . and yet there it is working.

I will not try to figure it out just accept it and hope it keeps working.
