I don't recall it ever being cheap, as in economical, to "cast shadows in hell" or "light up the whole neighborhood." "America is at that awkward stage. Precisely. It's the same reason TV antennas are specified to have range. They don't, really. What they do have is a certain amount of gain in certain directions. Coupled with the average receiver's sensitivity, the average TV transmitter tower having a certain effective radiated power, and the average terrain: The come up with a number. It's really just a more-or-less relative expression of performance. In either case: Variables such as rain, fog, or dust; interfering structures (vegetation, terrain, man-made), poor receiver performance (eyesight), or lower transmitter power (albedo or reflectivity) change the numbers drastically. You may want to take a look at the Maratac Rebel Throw. It's become one of my favorite handheld lights ever. It takes a 21700 but comes with an adapter to allow for powering it with 18650's. The quality of construction is outstanding and its size to output ratio is most impressive. This light is a beast.

Conveniently located directly above the center of the Earth |
On a whim I bought an admittedly cheap Chinese version a couple years ago, of an actual pocket size Cree LED "Wissblue H1" that's barely palm wide, 18650 size barrel, with a flare to around 2" reflector. IIRC it's in the 9000 max lumen range. At under $40 I didn't expect much. So far it works well at lighting the far corner end of my nearly 100 yards away property line, in brilliant white. Generally I run it down around middle click position, as it does produce 'too bright' for many situations. Bought some 5800 amp rechargeable "Skywolfeye" 18650s. Amazing performance for my needs. It's saved me from getting the more respectable brands of even higher output.

Yew got a spider on yo head |
Malkoff Hound dog super is not the brightest, but it can sustain 1400 lumen output unlike a lot of lights that will throttle down after a minute or two. I can still light up a hill side 100 yards away. It's big enough it doesn't get crazy hot either for a long time. And you can club the shit out of shit with it. #BoycottChina

Perhaps they will either do another run or make it a standard production item if they receive enough positive feedback. I have many quality lights and although I've only had it for a relatively short time, this one is right up there with the best of them thus far.

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
I should be careful what I ask for. There are now a half dozen new lights on my want list.

It's not cheap, and it's not a pocket flashlight, but when I seriously need to light something up, the Fenix LR50R is my go to light. It's a searchlight and a floodlight (run separately or together), so you're never wishing you had brought "the other light". What's your budget and size limits? Something like the Lumintop GT94 would probably do it for you, 20,000 lumens and 2400 meters of throw. It's a decent blend of both. If you want pocketable with a wow factor, the Emisar D4V2 or DT8 will do it. They can't sustain those numbers for very long at all, but they can go back into your pocket after lighting up your next 3 neighbors' back yards. "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
Another vote for this. Work got me and the other night shift guy each one of these last year. He wears his on his belt...IMO it's too big for that. Mine lives in my car, clipped to the cage right next to the gun rack so I can reach it from the driver's seat. This thing is brighter than the LED spotlight on my car, with the added bonus that if we're out on a track or searching a warehouse or something, it can come with you. I actually grab it more than the handheld thermal now, because it's so bright it can reach out just as far, and burn through shadows and underbrush even better without having to hold it up to your face. It's an absolutely awesome light. Less than $100, too.

I just picked up one of these for my keychain. It's half the size of my keyfob and ridiculously brite with good throw. Downside is that at max it only has about 10min of run time, however the 'moon' mode is adequate for 'getting around' in the dark and has an estimated 11 hours of run time. https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I reject your reality and substitute my own. --Adam Savage, MythBusters

I'm glad you're happy with it, but that lumen spec is grossly inflated, likely by a huge margin. The 18650's are certainly inflated. 18650s with more than 3600 mAh simply don't exist. There's no telling what yours actually are. At best they will underperform, at worst they could be dangerous. You would be better off getting batteries from a reputable vendor. There are more, but here are a few good sources: https://liionwholesale.com/ https://www.illumn.com/ https://www.18650batterystore.com/ edit- found a review for those batteries: https://lygte-info.dk/review/b...k-green%29%20UK.html "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." Yeah I should have stayed out of this thread just like I should have stayed out of the fixed blade knife thread! Just about pulled the trigger on the Nitecore light and then looked at this Protac. I like the price of the Protac but you have to remove the batteries from the light and charge each individually is that right? That's kind of a drawback because I could see myself losing batteries and they are like $30 to replace. "Fixed fortifications are monuments to mans stupidity" - George S. Patton

All the lights I buy are no bigger than a single CR123 battery and can fit in my pocket. That being said, my Armytek Predator Pro from a few years ago is a beast. To this day I have not found another light that produces such a tight beam at distance. JC

The family gave me a Convoy 4X18A for Father’s Day (At the suggestion of my son who is a flashlight geek). It is a relatively large (forget pocket carry unless you are Andre the Giant), but surprisingly handy light.
