I still have hair and live in Alabama so it’s very rare that I have to wear one.
I dont know how the beanies and caps stay on the head. I seen wind blow a old timers ball cap 40 feet away. The knits seem to stay down over the ears in the strongest winds. My thin ass company knit allows the hard blowing winds right through. Very noticable. If the beanies are good by so many here, I am convinced.

On a day like today, I'll wear my old wool watch cap. Most of the time it doesn't get cold enough down here to need a hat even though I keep my hair really short, but a few times a year, I'll break out the watch cap or a Carhartt fleece beanie.

David, while not a beanie or ball cap, my Aussie hats are subject to being "airlifted" by brisk winds. At my age I certainly don't relish chasing a nice hat down the street. Both the hat and this old man could be damaged in the process. (Also shown in my avatar.)
So one of my two Akubra Riverine hats is outfitted with a stampede string which matches the braided kangaroo hat band. Simply cinch it up under your chin when needed. There are several ways to wear it when not in use. I prefer what is shown here with the string cinched on the back top of the brim and hanging down my back. More unobtrusive than you might think.
As an aside the Akubra Riverine hats were bought in December 2007 and January 2008. They have given exceptional service which isn't really surprising given the quality of the fur-felt and stitching. This message has been edited. Last edited by: bald1,

Nice hat and looks very good quality. I would freeze my ears off in that. Not a cold weather hat. Was out shubblin snow at 6:00 AM. 12 degrees and winds shifting from north to from west. Have on my company knit and 2 hoods pulled over. Went through this last week but in my parka. These wares are required when the weather is crap.

Actually it works quite well as long as the temps are not sub-zero and winds high. I cited it as a winter hat augmented by a mouton ushanka for really cold weather in my earlier post. This message has been edited. Last edited by: bald1,

A beenie that one of our members knitted. She karma'ed me a Beenie for my son when he was born 8 years ago almost to the day. Then sent me a matching one. It's still my favorite beenine and I break it out every winter.
It's one of those unreplaceable treasures from my "invisible friends".

Boggin is synonymous with beanie in my part of Appalachia. Turtle Fur is great, as are most synthetics. Wool or acrylic makes me itch. Alpaca or merino are good to go.
