Cap/insulated helmet liner as issued to me by US Army in the 1970"s while in Alaska. For warmer cool weather it was worn with sides rolled up and folded to be like a cap. When needed could be unfolded and the flaps covered ears/ neck / lower face and a small flap would cover forehead. Worked quiet well in temperatures of well past -40*F. Might not have been the most fashionable look but it kept the head and ears warm. .................................................. drill sgt.

It doesn't get very cold around here very often. Normally I just wear a baseball cap. I have a wool watch cap for when it does get cold. I've got an old milsurp OD wool scarf around here someplace too (I think I wore it once or twice when cutting Christmas trees years ago).

You can’t wear them until it gets very cold, but fur hats like the Russians wear work great in single digits and below zero Fahrenheit. I have one I rarely wear since it isn’t cold enough for it. It is cold enough, and it’s 500 miles away.

Here in the land of hard winters I’ve got hats for all conditions. Beanie are least used being little warmer than a ball cap. Moving up are Stormy Kromer cap, then wool watch caps, then if conditions warrant I’ll bring out the badger fur bomber hat I can’t go over about 15 degrees in that one. Most coats are hooded as well. Have I mentioned balaclavas? I have a few.

Akubra fur-felt hat unless it gets ridiculously cold, then it's my mouton ushanka.

Basque beret until it's really cold. Then one of several possibilities that cover the ears. I think all styles have been mentioned already.

As a kid we used to wear knit wool caps tilted a certain way on your head. You were teased if you did not. A kid whose father was a physicist wore one of those Russian fur hats one day. He spent the entire recess trying to get it back. Some kid eventually threw it on the roof. I remember thinking he must be a Communist or something. Absolutely nobody wore those hats. Most days you slathered on the Brylcreem and water and let Nature freeze your hair properly in place.

David,

The uskanka has ear covers that untie at the top, fold down, and do a GREAT job keeping things toasty. Big Grin

Depends on just how cold and how long I'm going to be outside.

Nothing except the hood on my jacket.

A ball cap and the hood on my jacket.

A smartwool or fleece beanie/watch cap. (Maybe with the hood up if snow is actively falling.)

I have a North Face thick fleece beanie for cold weather, a shearling ushanka for colder, and wear a lighter beanie under a hood for brass monkey cold.
