Yes the squirrel hat. I got a high viz one in bright yellow. Not expensive and the wind dont penetrate its outer shell.

People who only wear baseball caps or no hat at all are really asking for it. They may say that their heads don't feel cold, but you lose more of your body heat through your head than any other parts of your body, and they could unexpectedly find themselves in hypothermia.
Yup. Danger for sure . The Boone County Sherriffs Deputies have to buy their own. They are quite heavy knit and I wish I had one like them.

My unprotected ears will get cold, but nothing like my feet or hands even with good boots and gloves, so I would think there’s some significant heat loss through the appendages as well—no?
A scarf is very protective. I wear red, white and, blue heavy knit. That can stay around my neck and under my chin all day. Works great.

TMatsI wear a microfleece skull cap from Kühl, i also have a merino wool knit cap from Smartwool, both are pretty effective. I note that this year’s Kühl skull cap is also merino wool, rather than microfleece.

The reason your hands and feet get cold is that as your internal temp starts to decrease the body will naturally start regulating blood flow from the appendages to protect vital organs. Hands and feet, especially feet, are the furthest from the heart and at the end of your appendages thus the most affected by decreased blood flow.

I always wear a hat, even in the summertime, so I’ve got that covered (literally
).
But my hands and feet get colder faster if I don’t have on good boots and gloves, so it’s not just redirected blood flow at fault.

mutedbladeI used to have a fleece lined wool hat made by Sherpa Adventure Gear but lost it sometime last winter (pretty sure it was at Richmond, VA during Lobby Day 2020). They no longer make what I had otherwise I would have simply gotten a new one, so this year I was on the lookout for another good cold weather hat. I ended up with
Kuiu Kenai Beanie. VERY, VERY warm and blocks wind better than anything I've used in the past but be warned, it may cause you to overheat if doing anything physical. I got it mainly to keep my noodle warm while hunting. If I am out and about I wear a simple fleece lined merino wool beanie. Have them in every jacket that I own and extras in every vehicle in case I drop one. Having cold hands, feet, or head make for a miserable time and can lead to some serious issues, so I try to keep what I need handy to be happy.

ShouldBFishinI'm more than a little thin on top, so a hat is a must when outside year around. Lately it's been sub-zero, the Filson Wool (Elmer Fudd) cap has been my go to.

walkinghorseColumbia bomber style with the flaps that I have had for 20 years or so. But if active outdoors and really cold then a stocking hat as it lets moisture out and minimizes a wet head. Of course at 72 really active doesn't occur as much anymore.

MikeinNCWool watch cap I was issued as a sailor.
Several years ago, I think it was member Bredica (I’m sure I’m spelling it wrong) had a karma with a wool cap made from a WWI pattern. I got her to send me the pattern and I forwarded that to my mom who made me one in a very soft wool. So now I can choose either the basic black or olive crap fancy cap.
