Where Do I Find Inexpensive Surplus Computer Servers? Login/Join

My home systems run on the VMWare Hyper-Converged Infrastructure model. I need to replace my existing ancient Dell 2950s with something slightly newer to upgrade to VMWare 7.0 U2. My home domain (2019 functional level) is also starting to choke on the old hardware.

I don't need anything new. Something like a used Dell R720 with 16 cores, 192GB Ram, 13 TB of usable storage, etc, will do it for a home domain.

Where could I get something like this on the cheap? I found a comparable system online for $840, but that is a bit more than I want to spend.

What do you recommend?

I've had really good luck with Garland Computer. Bought 8 or 10 Servers and Desktops from him. One had an issue and he took care of it right away.

I'll see if I can remember where I used to get my used servers from.

Dell Refurbished has servers.

https://www.dellrefurbished.com/

They often have a coupon for 40-50 percent off. This weekend it is 40% off any one item.

I'd scour Ebay for your desired specifications.
In the price range you are requesting it is going to be some pretty old stuff.

While suggesting caution, I've had luck in the past using Craigslist.

Hunt up a building maintenance man at an office high rise company.

Companies that move often abandon furniture, network equipment, phone systems, A/V equipment, etc. in place. The building maintenance guys scoop it up and give it to their friends, or sell it for peanuts. I got my Dell R510 this way, one of four that my buddy was giving away, also got a Cisco 48-port GigE switch, patch panel, rack-mount cabinet, UPS, and a few Engenius APs this way, could have had numerous big screen TVs if I'd had a use for them.

If you're near Colorado... I've got the deal for you.

We decomm'd a datacenter recently. I've got HP DL360 Gen9s, with dual Xeons, 192 gig of ram, used as a VM farm. StoreVirtual NAS storage boxes. And a 60 terabyte Synology NAS. A few other one offs like a DL560 Gen9 with 4 Xeon CPUs, etc.

If this is something you're interested in, let me know and I'll get pricing! Or anyone else that's close enough to pick up.

I watch people at my work throw away 100's of thousands of dollars of equipment almost on a daily basis. Someone should figure out a way to resell those to people.

Honestly that's what we're trying to do, save these great ones from the scrap pile. That DL560 cost 140 THOUSAND dollars (it has server class NVME storage) just a couple years ago, and... besides plugging it in for testing last week, it has never been used. We're trying to get a thousand bucks out of it, so it's one hell of a deal.

Email me (it's in my profile) and I'll send you an inventory of what we have available. There's plenty for everyone I'd say, and we're still getting more. I just don't want to turn this post into a for sale ad!
