bendablegreat economy proves problematic in Iowa City
After 70 years in Iowa City the Proctor and Gamble company is pulling out and headed out of Iowa , all together.
They are not unhappy with the quality of employee's, not at all .
no, there are unhappy because they stopped being the largest employer in five counties, about 20 years ago.
the largest employer is now The University of Iowa college and Hospital.
P&G will not compete with the wages, benefits and job positions.
My nephew has been with the company for 13 years , and they offered to move him to the new southern facility , with 25% wage reduction.
He was not pleased. even if the cost of living is 25% less , elsewhere.
back when the unemployment rate in Eastern Iowa was 5% , 6.5% and even higher,
people would climb over one another to stand in line for a day to work for P&G , on a temp basis, with hopes of becoming permanent , full time and eventually w/ benefits.
now that the Johnson county unemployment rate is 1.3% - 1.5% , P&G is cutting out.

ZSMICHAELThis has been happening in the Midwest for a long time. It is indeed sad. Where in the South are they relocating?

JALLENI doubt that this is the cause, or even a principal one. Other forces are in play, burdensome inefficient regulation, maybe union foolishness, poor snow removal provisions, etc.
With unemployment that low, maybe labor costs are starting to get out of hand.

BBMW http://www.thegazette.com/subj...f-iowa-city-20180207It sounds like a manufacturing consolidation. They can do in one plant what they're doing in two. The other plant is also closer to most of their customers. And yes, since it's in W Virginia, the labor costs are likely lower.
