I never served bit are those going ashore given training or orders on how to respond in a situation like this? I can't imagine this has never happened before.

If you get into a scrape, grab your shipmates and head to the pier.
Problem is, if those Marines/sailors fight back, like the way they're supposed to, then the story becomes "American GI's riot and destroy...' To which the captain of the ship and the US Ambassador are left having to explain how x number of locals ended up with broken noses and dislocated arms.

This is more or less why I asked the question. How much are Sailors, Marines, Soldiers supposed to put up with without starting an international incident?

I’m surprised they didn’t get cut. In my MP days in Germany we had a ton of Turks there, and I saw soldiers getting cut by Turks almost weekly. They won’t stab you but they damn sure will cut you.

I was warned many a time while stationed in Germany in the mid-90s with the Army to not screw with the Turks there as they all carried knives and would cut you without any thought. Luckily all my interaction with them was only getting delicious Döner Kebabs (Turkish Gyro sandwich) at the many local kebab shops in my town.

I miss the Doner so much, I was addicted to the stuff! Were you in Kaiserslautern? I was an mp there from 08 ish to 2012

The best ones I had were from the Darmstadt Markt Platz, two Greek brothers had a shop there. They used thin sliced lamb and beef, not the processed crap loaf. I would usually get a slice of fried goat cheese with my kebab.

This is the line from the story that I picked up on.
quote:
"In addition, 5 plain clothes US soldiers saw the incident from a distance, and got involved.
Two sailors attacked by 15 and 5 soldiers “got involved.” Good on them for diving in to help out their brothers (and/or sisters) in the Navy. Hope they inflicted some damage.

Makes me think of Coach Monken from the USMA speaking of the players on the field in the annual Army/Navy game. Paraphrasing: “The only game in which every man on the field would give his life for everyone watching in the stands.”
