Favorite jack stands

400mFavorite jack stands
I was considering welding feet onto my HF jack stands to avoid digging into concrete. It’s probably safer to buy a good set of stands. So what jack stands do you like? I’m not setting anything heavier than a minivan on them so most likely 3 ton.

P250UA5I got a pair like this a while back & they're great, but a little on the tall side.

trapper189My 6-ton Harbor Freight Daytona jack stands came with pads welded on the bottom and did not dig in the dirt on the side of the road when I used one to hold the boat trailer while swapping tires. Probably too tall for the minivan.
I’ve never had jack stands dig into concrete. 40 years ago, I cut plywood squares to put under the jacks stands the second time I used them on asphalt.

Calif PhilOTC has always made some nice jackstands.

wrightdBe careful with Habor Freight jack stands. They have a history if issues. Good for 99 time out of 100, but for life safety devices, you don't need the best, but you need better than Harbor Freight.
Re footpads, I think they're better all the time regardless of the condition of your concrete, asphalt, or ground, since I spreads the total weight over additional surface area.
Many of the better brands, and prob almost all of the best USA brands, have pads. I don't own those guys myself, they're just too expensive.

The easiest thing you can do is to cut some 3/4” plywood into 2’ by 2’ squares. This is what we did at the track when the pit was dirt or the asphalt was too hot.
But if you want to spend some coin without going overboard these should do the trick…

My truck and the Mrs 4Runner sit high enough, (no lift on either one) that I just use my floor jack.
Even if there is a TOTAL failure, the vehicles sit high enough to not cause me harm.
I can use my Magic Creeper to slide under them without raising anything so it’s not really an issue with the vehicles in my household.
My friends Challenger, yes a jack stand would be nice but I don’t work on that.

I have the same one and just ordered another one. I like quality but I do not use jack stands enough to pay $300 plus for them.

TheBullI use Esco jack stands. I have a small pair(#10499) for my lower car and a larger pair(#10498K) for the pickup/SUV. Larger pair also came with axle stand attachments. The rounded flat bottoms work great on my concrete paver driveway. If using only on pinch welds, you might want and additional pinch weld pad.

400mPinch weld pads are another can of worms. I haven’t seen any where the cut was deep enough for the pinch weld to sit in without having enough reach to slice a pad in two. Most don’t even look like they would be stable on top of the jack. Straddling a pinch weld seems like a stupid idea. I can find better ways to keep from becoming a pancake.
For crying out loud if you’re gonna tell people to straddle the damn weld, make a proper jack top. That is just one more thing to add to our “things I hate about cars” threads.
On the other hand, you guys have shown me some really cool jacks.
