I've had several MRI's, in the past, without any problem. My last one, about 5 years ago, wasn't the best. They put me in the tube about 4 times, and I came right back out. Finally one of the techs put a washcloth over my eyes, and I was able to get it done. A couple days ago I went in to get one on my right hand. I was face down, and my hand was in a box, I guess to keep me from moving it. I only had to go in about half way, and I could see out the other end. I couldn't see the roof at all. I don't think I lasted 10 seconds. It bothered me enough that I didn't even want to try it again. So, I'm rescheduled for the 18th, and I got a couple Valium from my Dr. I've never had Valium before, so I don't really know what to expect. Has anyone had to do a Valium enhanced MRI, and how did it work for you. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Muddflap,

I have never had an MRI on Valium, but I have taken many Valium in the past. They just make you a little sleepy, and calm. I can see how they would do great for not allowing the claustrophobia to go out of control. Oddly enough, I have an MRI scheduled on Monday at 07:30 am. It’s for my lower back, so I’m not super excited. It would be spectacular if they could load me feet first instead of head first. I’ll ask, but I’m not expecting the answer I want to hear. My orthopedic doctor said I may need to have one one. Last one I took in 2014 wasn’t the most pleasurable experience. If I require one again I’ve asked him to get me an open MRI scheduled, I don’t care how far I have to go but I’m not going into the tube again. -------------------------------------—————— ————————--Ignorance is a powerful tool if applied at the right time, even, usually, surpassing knowledge(E.J.Potter, A.K.A. I've never had Valium but I wish I had had that choice. I bet you'll be fine.

I had a brain MRI and could not do it the first time. They prescribed Valium but Valium does very little to me. I went to my primary care and explained to him the issue. He prescribed me something else (do not recall) and told me to try one at home at time how long it took to take effect. Then use that time to take it before my appointment. I do not recall what it was, but once I took that I did not care about anything. I recall them pulling me out for the contrast injection and that was about it. Never had any drug do that to me before. I still have several that I never used. When I got lasik they also gave Valium. The guy before me took it and was out like a light, they had to postpone his surgery. I could take one and it has zero effect on me. Experiment before, get the right medication and it will go easily. You’re paying them, make them take the necessary accommodations to allow you to endure the MRI.

The place where I’ve had them done offers an option to be given Xanex but you need to agree and sign off that you will have a driver to drive you home afterward. It helps considerably but wipes you out for the rest of the day. Beancooker, they should let you go in feet first. That’s what I have done. Best wishes for you both. ____________ Μολὼν Λαβέ 01 03 04 14 16 18

I am always given an MRI feet first. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
The last time I did an MRI it was on my lower back, and they stuck me all the way in there. The only way I got though it was that I'm tall enough that the very top of my head was coming out the other end, and if I looked up that way I could just barely see out. If I looked straight ahead the wall of the tube was about 2" from my face, and I didn't like that at all. My eyes were sore by the time I got done, but I made it. Never knew I was claustrophobic until that day.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’m trying not to get too worked up over this, I know that won’t help anything. Dr. got me 2 pills. Instructions say to take one 2 hours before the appointment, and I can take the other if necessary. Guess if that doesn’t work, there are open machines in KC and that’s only an hour away.

That was me but a few inches shorter. I knew that open space was there but I couldn't see it.

Try covering your face/eyes so you can't see anything BEFORE you actually go in the MRI tube and don't let any body part touch the walls of the inside of the MRI tube. I brought a large silk bandana and covered my eyes prior to going in and kept my arms against my body, away from the the interior walls and this allowed me to tolerate it.

2 years ago I had to have a head and neck MRI. They needed me to lay perfectly still with my arms hyper extended over my head for the entire scan. Scan time was to be 40 minutes with a 2-3 breaks. I couldn't tolerate the positioning. Ended up having it done the next day under Anesthesia and it went perfect. Sometimes, you gotta roll the hard six

I hate them. Things that work for me is getting a full briefing on the scan schedule so I know what I have to master in terms of timing (remember its to help me). And then a countdown by the staff on where we are. And some sort of drug schedule. And then completely closing my eyes the whole time. There are open machines (less resolution) that may also help you. I have designed at least 100 specific ideas to make this better but so far no mfg. has adopted them. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

I've had two MRIs one without Valium and one with Valium. The first one was without and I thought it would never end. I had to fight my way through the whole thing to try to stay calm. The last one was just last week, and I told the Dr I wanted Valium this time. As it turned out I didn't need to go all the way in the tube, so really didn't need the Valium. The drug just made me a little loopy and unsteady on my feet. I had to sit down to get dressed. Standing one one leg was not happening. Also I was glad my wife was driving home. Best of luck to you. Shit, I just go to sleep. Doesn't bother me whatsoever. It's just a nice cozy place to nap to me except for the BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

Not as lean, not as mean, Still a Marine |
I'm like Mars, I usually fall asleep. The last one I had was on my shoulder. I was in the machine head-first and it was tight, next thing I know I being yelled at to wake up... The snoring was causing a blurry image! I also had a few MRI's on my knee. I don't know if it's different now, but the magnetic waves caused the pigment in my tattoo to heat up, felt like they were burning my leg. Luckily it was at the end and at the lower portion of the image so we were able to finish pretty quick after that. I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

Step by step walk the thousand mile road |
There are options that may alleviate your claustrophobia. First, unless you go open MRI (which have lower resolution) look for an MRI with the widest tube diameter you can find. The standard bore is 60cm. There are 70cm "wide bore" MRIs that are much, much preferable from a patient comfort standpoint but that give very high quality images. My last MRI was for my shoulder (needs to be replaced, I'd rather skip that surgery (YT video of actual procedure)). We tried a 60cm tube and I couldn't take the discomfort from the position my shoulder was placed in because I was wedged into the tube like a cat burrito. Moved to a 70 cm tube and the same position was a piece of cake. There are also 65cm bore MRIs but they are not that common, IME. After that, drugs. Lots of drugs. Valium is an option, as is Xanax. Looked up what they gave me, it was the generic version of Xanax (Alprazolam). That made everything good….
