Turns out teen killer Karmelo Anthony isn't quite so poor after all.
Somebody helped with the creation of the give/send/go account, and they covered their butts:

Support for the Anthony Family
We are grateful for your support during this incredibly difficult time for Karmelo Anthony and his family. This fundraiser has been established to provide comprehensive assistance to the Anthony family as they navigate the many challenges surrounding Karmelo's case.
Purpose of the Fund While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses. The funds raised will also support a range of urgent and necessary needs that have emerged as a result of this situation, including — but not limited to — the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats to their safety and well-being, as well as basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and other security measures.
We ask for your continued prayers, support, and solidarity. Your contribution not only helps protect and stabilize the family, but also serves as a powerful message of community care and resistance in the face of injustice.
EIGHT F-bombs in 63 seconds. That kind of redundancy makes her sound stupid. But, at least she's smart enough to recognize a grift when she sees one.
I found what you said riveting.

Like I tell my teens… Me and your Mom are rich, YOU are destitute and live at my pleasure in my benevolent dictatorship home. It will only get worse the day you turn 18.
This Karmelo kid is 18 and a legal adult. Id bet he’s broke as a joke. His parents have all that money. so on a technicality he probably is destitute and should get the public defender. The sooner he gets out of the news feed the better.

My father used to give me money to buy my school lunch. I never bought school lunch because I blew all the money. I learned early that you can go hungry if you spend your eating money on other crap. This POS got a half million dollars and needs a public defender? I'd deny the request.
Let the court appoint a public defender. That guy will plead him out and its "Adios, Karmelo"!

I agree with Matt Walsh, that the D.A. asking for and getting a 1st degree indictment means the D.A.s office has a certain amount of confidence in this case. IMO, they have wisely limited the amount of evidence released to the public, and are staying on top of the case. The murderer is going to need a multi-million dollar legal team to have a chance at beating the rap, but it ain't going to happen.

All he needs is one sympathetic person on the jury.

... to get a hung jury and a mistrial, whereas it takes the entire jury to get a unanimous not guilty verdict.
If one sympathetic person holds it up, they try again with a second trial and a whole new jury.
And in this case, the evidence appears to be a slam dunk. The best the defense can try to do is either stall/delay, or try to mitigate the eventual sentence.

The public defender will plead it down to 2nd degree murder or at the very least 1st degree with life in prison and no death penalty. That's what public defenders do. No sense playing Don Quixote with a "Dream Team" of high dollar lawyers.
They got him dead nuts on video and a bunch of witnesses. Plea deal is the only option they have, unless they want to claim he was insane.

***Old Thread Alert***
It now starts, over a year later, jury selection for what may become a nationally high profile murder trial, it has all of the earmarks of an exploitive media story.

Should've done this while it was still the school year and not summer protest season during an election year.
The faux reverend / charlatan / convicted criminal / community activist representing the Next Generation Action Network is definitely going to try to turn this into a black vs white shit show. The mainstream media will help him as protests and riots generate ratings.

Hopefully there will be enough third party video to ram that narrative up the media's ass.

I guess Karmelo Anthony never watched a cops and robbers show on TV and learned to shut up at a crime scene. He was probably proud of himself, I think he might have confused defending his distorted ego with actual self defense.
From the Fox News article oddball linked to:
"According to police records, Anthony told responding officers he acted in self-defense. Investigators also reported that Anthony made a spontaneous statement after being detained, telling officers, "I'm not alleged, I did it.""

White boy "dissed" him.
Anthony's attorney, Mike Howard, has maintained that the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation have yet to be heard in court.
"We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmelo Anthony may have acted in self-defense," Howard said following the indictment.
But...
Under Texas law, self-defense is what attorneys call a "confession and avoidance" defense, meaning a defendant admits to the conduct but argues it was legally justified under the circumstances.
"The crux of the issue is that you cannot provoke the harm and then retreat behind self-defense," Rosenthal said.
According to Rosenthal, one of the key legal questions could be whether evidence shows Anthony provoked or escalated the confrontation before the fatal encounter, a factor that could significantly affect how a self-defense claim is evaluated by the court and jury.
"Did Karmelo Anthony initially provoke the harm? Did he initially elevate the tenseness or the threat in the situation?" Rosenthal said. "Or did the victim provoke it?"
Rosenthal said jurors are likely to hear competing accounts about who said what, where individuals were standing and whether anyone escalated the confrontation before the stabbing occurred.
He added that the jury could ultimately be asked to consider not only murder, but potentially a lesser offense such as manslaughter depending on how the evidence develops and what instructions are given by the court.
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown

The attorney is blowing hot air. The killer was trespassing with no other allies or friends with him; it would be his word against a tent full of friends and teammates of Metcalf, all witnesses to the killing.

I'll take it a step further. This occurred at a track meet and each team had their own individual tent. The only reason for Anthony to be sneaking around in another team's tent is that he's a thief, and he got caught so he pulled his knife (not allowed on school grounds either) and got his ego bruised so he killed his confrontor (i.e. the guy who actually belonged in that team's tent).

The judge told the media not to identify the current witness because he’s a minor. This witness says Karmelo Anthony was asked at least 15 times to leave their tent—Anthony refused to leave. The teen says no one ganged up on Karmelo. Witness adds that Karmelo was provoking Austin. Witness says Austin Metcalf pushed Karmelo but it wasn’t a hard push. That’s when Karmelo pulled the knife from his book bag and stabbed Austin. He adds, Karmelo tossed the weapon and ran off. The 9-1-1 call placed by the witness was played.
