No they had a private attorney, just a very cheap one. The excellent criminal defense attorneys (black or white) wanted $500K up front. The private attorney he had was $50-70K or so. Crump just wants it for the publicity.

As for the comment on the officer "leisurely" responding. Bullshit. The officer did a good job arriving on a chaotic scene with large amount of people spread over a huge area with not much initial information available (911 calls are ALWAYS all over the road on victim, suspect descriptions, and locations, dispatchers try to pick the wheat form the chaff but it is very hard to do). The officer identified the suspect, took him into custody without incident, located the injured person, and radioed all that information for responding police and ambulance personnel. There is a time to run into (amps up your system resulting in tunnel vision, auditory exclusion, ie hearing but not listening) a scene and there is a time to move smoothly while assessing everything going on, especially if you are the first officer on scene.

Texas judge who presided over Karmelo Anthony murder trial removed from case over 'got it right' comment

Attorney Russell Wilson II argues Judge John Roach's post-verdict comments created an appearance of bias against his client

A Texas judge granted Karmelo Anthony’s request Wednesday to remove the judge who presided over his murder trial from the post-trial case, finding that a reasonable outside observer could question whether the judge appeared impartial.

Judge John Roach, who presided over Anthony’s June murder trial, was removed after Anthony’s attorneys played Roach’s post-trial WFAA interview in court and argued his remarks showed he had already prejudged the defense’s request for a new trial.

Harle said Wednesday he did not know Roach and described recusal as a high bar. He said he did not find that Roach violated judicial conduct rules and believed Roach could be fair.

But Harle said the question was not whether Roach could be fair. He found that a third party looking at Roach’s public comments could question the judge’s impartiality and granted the recusal motion.

Retired District Judge Michael Chitty has been assigned to preside over Anthony’s motion for a new trial, scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, the court confirmed.

The recusal hearing started around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Court records identified Judge Sid Harle as the presiding judge.

Anthony attended Wednesday’s hearing after a bench warrant had been issued in the case.

He was convicted in June of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who prosecutors said he fatally stabbed during an altercation at a Frisco track meet. A Collin County jury sentenced Anthony to 35 years in prison.

Wilson leads Anthony’s legal team, which filed two motions July 7 – one to recuse Roach and the other seeking a new trial. The new-trial hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.

The defense argues Roach cannot fairly rule on the post-trial motions because of remarks he made to reporters after the verdict.

The filing cites comments in which Roach said the jury "got it right" and defended several trial rulings, including his handling of courtroom access and the dismissal of three Black prospective jurors.

Anthony’s attorneys contend those comments have created the appearance that Roach prejudged the defense’s claims.

The filing does not directly challenge Anthony’s guilt or innocence. Instead, it alleges constitutional and legal errors that the defense says deprived him of a fair trial.

The motion argues Anthony’s trial was not open enough to the public. Cameras were barred from the courtroom and only 27 seats were available for members of the public.

Anthony’s lawyers also accuse prosecutors of breaking an off-the-record agreement about character evidence and other alleged acts unrelated to the murder charge. They argue the dispute forced Anthony to decide whether to testify while risking the introduction of evidence they say could unfairly prejudice jurors.

The defense also challenges the jury instructions, arguing they limited jurors’ ability to fully consider Anthony’s claim of self-defense.

Roach referred the recusal request to another judge under Texas procedure.

Wednesday's ruling means another judge will handle Anthony’s remaining trial-court proceedings, including his request for a new trial.

Convicted killer Karmelo Anthony allegedly fantasized about stabbing someone and 'licking the blood off the blade' just hours before murdering Austin Metcalf, prosecutors revealed.

The 19-year-old's defense team headed back to court Thursday for an appeal hearing, months after he was found guilty of killing 17-year-old athlete Austin Metcalf with a knife at a high school track meet last April.

In a shocking revelation, State Prosecutor Bill Wiskye pointed to disturbing text messages that he said exposed Anthony's obsession with violence, including a habit of starting fights.

'There is a text message where he fantasies about stabbing someone and licking the blood off the blade,' Wiskye told the court.

The morning of the murder, Anthony allegedly sent a message that read: 'I'm low key on the verge.'

Wiskye said that while living in Baton Rouge, Anthony’s parents enrolled him in a special LSU program for children who struggled to control their aggression and 'keep their hands to themselves.'

His claims came just one day after Anthony scored a court victory, when the judge who presided over his trial was removed as he fights to overturn his murder conviction.

Anthony's defense claims several issues denied him a fair trial, including pressure to waive his right to testify, improper jury instructions and restrictions on public access to the courtroom.

A secret 'gentleman’s agreement' between prosecutors and the defense initially barred Anthony’s character witnesses from discussing certain details about him and his family, keeping potentially damaging information about both teenagers out of court.

New details about Metcalf's past also came to light Thursday during opening statements, including graffiti he had written years earlier that the prosecutor described as containing 'vile, racist stuff.'

Wiskye revealed that The Frisco Police Department obtained the contents of Metcalf's phone and had access to his 'school records and fights and bad words.'

He then explained why he had proposed the 'gentleman’s agreement' to Anthony's attorneys in the first place.

'It is gonna pour fuel on the fire. Okay?' he told the court.

Wiskye said that despite having information about Anthony's private text messages and remarks, he feared revealing it could further inflame tensions surrounding the case and potentially put someone's life at risk.

'Everybody, no matter where you are on the spectrum, whatever you believe, you're going to look at this case and feel this case proves it,' he said.

He further detailed the wave of hatred surrounding the June trial, admitting that officials in the county were largely unprepared for a case that had exploded into the national spotlight.

'All the threats are going to go to the level, none of us have ever seen it. Quite frankly, to a level, none of us in Collin County were prepared to deal with,' he told the court.

On the day Karmelo Anthony fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf, prosecutors report he sent a text message at 1 a.m. that read, “I’m lowk on the verge,” and then stressed the point further.

Later that morning on April 2, 2025 - only hours before Karmelo Anthony stabbed Austin Metcalf to death at a high-school track meet - prosecutors state that Karmelo Anthony’s girlfriend told a Centennial High School staff member he was “engaging in stalking behavior, to include, but not limited to, driving by her home and refusing to allow her to end their relationship.”

In a 75-page filing, prosecutors also note that Karmelo Anthony had earlier been accused of taking his girlfriend’s phone and, in October 2024, drafted a “to-do” list instructing her how to handle quote “weirdos,” which included the line “say sum slick like my bf kill people.”

Text exchanges further reveal that he admitted on at least two occasions to punching girls in the face.

Prosecutors located 2021 messages between Karmelo Anthony and another student discussing robbing someone for $300.

Other texts show Karmelo Anthony recounting a fight and punching someone “so hard he had to stop fighting.”

In 2023, prosecutors say Karmelo Anthony told a friend he planned to vandalize a house in Austin, Texas, writing, “I just feel like it, I gotta grudge.”

In 2021, Karmelo Anthony informed a friend he had been suspended for three days after fighting, adding, “they said next time I do sum I get recommended for expulsion,” court papers show.

In a 2023 text exchange with a friend, prosecutors have messages in which Karmelo Anthony wrote “Imma shoot the school up tmr” “with my blick,” but later followed up with “I would never actually do that.”

In a 2024 thread, prosecutors state Karmelo Anthony admitted to carrying a firearm, telling a friend before a party he would have “the gun in my pocket.”

The records also contain message threads in which Anthony mentions carrying a gun.

After multiple suspensions for fighting while in school in Louisiana, messages between Karmelo Anthony and his girlfriend surface after he moved to Frisco.

In one exchange she suggests he simply sit for a while; he said, “yea and punch ppl maybe run sometimes,” “I have to it’s like a priority for me,” “I like punching people,” “when get mad I see red,” “when I get mad I blackout,” “when I get mad I can’t control myself.”

Prosecutors also showed messages in which Karmelo Anthony admitted to getting high and drinking alcohol and even discussed selling drugs to obtain guns.

In 2024, prosecutors say Karmelo Anthony tried to assault a teacher, stating “I put my hands in face and everything.”

Also 2024, messages recovered by prosecutors suggest Karmelo Anthony attempted to take a weapon into the State Fair of Texas, asking a friend, “if the state fair got metal detectors.”

When told that detectors were in place, the friend replied, “you got the poker”; “yea I might have to toss it,” Karmelo Anthony answered.

Prosecutors report that Karmelo Anthony confessed to stealing a watch and earbuds in separate Collin County burglaries and to bringing a weapon onto a Frisco school campus, and remarked about his girlfriend, “she went in my bag to get my computer and I said no and she still went in it and grabbed it and my gun and my knife and some other stuff fell out.”

Numerous unreleased photos and videos show Karmelo Anthony holding firearms and making threats.

Authorities found a note on Karmelo Anthony’s phone containing a list of racial tropes and slurs about Blacks, whites and Hispanics.

In one message, prosecutors say Karmelo Anthony wrote, “I hate gay ppl.”

Prosecutors add that Karmelo Anthony repeatedly threatened to murder his girlfriend in texts, including lines such as “how many bullets u want coming out of ur chest” and “I’m going to get you (expletive).”

He also threatened her with a knife in one message and told her in another, “when I stab somebody I’m gonna lick their blood off the blade.”

But in a way had a retrial be allowed he may of actually received the life sentence he deserved.

Was a juror about a year ago on a domestic abuse case involving a gun by the drunk husband Juan.

Surprisingly we had a few females that didn’t want to ruin his life and because of them our sentencing was way too light which really pissed me off. To my surprise the judge also thought we were light on sentencing and gave him a longer sentence. He served more time, longer probation after jail time and stiffer fines.
Never knew a judge could do what he did but was very happy when I did a name search after the trial was over.

Apparently there are additional appeals his lawyers can seek. However, it also looks like the probability of success may not be in their favor.

I keep wondering how the lawyer's fees are getting paid - GoFuckMe and the like are not in the mix anymore. Maybe BLM has some extra grifted money floating around.
