I can't begin to know what a lot of 15 - 20 year olds know, these days.

I went to a new barber yesterday.
She was 25-28 years old.

She asked me how long I liked the sides to be.

I told her 1/4 inch long.
She replied " I don't know what that is"

" Is that a #1, #2 ,#3 or #4 ?"

Now I'am puzzled

The combs that snap on to her clippers are color coded but also have numbers on them
On the side.

I noticed that they also had fractions on the other side ,
She went to another gal to find out what a quarter inch was.

I picked out the one marked 1/4 and handed it too her.

No , the other gal did not know what the fractions on the combs meant either.

Now she's been cutting hair for nine years,
How does she get by without knowing how to measure?

What many people seem to know now, is that you dont really need to know anything if you can google it.

And that's why the schools want to spend more time talking about how students feel and who they want to have sex with in lieu of useful subjects.

If she's 25 and been cutting hair for 9 years, she must have started out giving back alley haircuts behind the basketball gym at school.

In fact, maybe that's the problem... Back in the day, she was too busy cutting hair to pay attention in math class.

It always surprises me that today's generation can't make change without the register doing it for them. Throw them an extra dime to make the change come out even and it's a deer in the headlights even with the assist of the cash register. Of course these days it's all credit cards, but still, it's a basic skill which is being lost. I learned to deal black jack years ago for various organizations I belonged to (chamber of commence et al) that put on casino night fund risers. It's been awhile but I could look at 4 cards and announce the count in seconds. People at the table where counting on their fingers.

I've actually seen cash registers that show pictures of the bills and coins the person is supposed to give for change. $.40 change would show a picture of a quarter, a dime, and a nickel.

And they wonder why they only make minimum wage. Roll Eyes

Problem with that is, that people don't know what they need to know.

I hate offended people. They come in two flavours - huffy and whiny - and it's hard to know which is worst. The huffy ones are self-important, narcissistic authoritarians in love with the sound of their own booming disapproval, while the whiny, sparrowlike ones are so annoying and sickly and ill-equipped for life on Earth you just want to smack them round the head until they stop crying and grow up.

I watched a story on the food industry. when McDonalds came out with the 1/4 pounder. A&W came out with a 1/3 pound burger . No one bought it because they thought it was smaller.

Without meaning to insult barbers, many were probably not the most highly ranked students in their classes. I don't mean to make excuses for people who don't know anything about basic fractions, but they may be more common than many of us think.
