I recall the 1976 celebration. I don't recall any woke theme like what the 250th has planned with "unfinished revolution". Seems out of place as our independence was from British rule. Hopefully, that can be removed beforehand.

What kind of celebrations are you folks considering?

I hadn't heard of this until just this morning, when I noticed something on my county's web site about it. Evidently 2026 marks my county's 250th as well.

The county itself doesn't have any specific plan yet, but Virginia has a web site dedicated to it: https://va250.org

Back in 1976, the US Mint issued a 3-coin set of re-designed reverses. The coin issue came under criticism for mediocrity, but that was what we got.



For the 250th Anniversary, the proposed coin designs are still in the talking phase so what will finally come out is unknown.

I actually liked those 1976 coins.

I can’t say that national unity was explicitly emphasized, probably because it was more or less understood: E Pluribus Unum and all that.

It’s hard to remember the absence of something, but I definitely don’t recall anything emphasizing “diversity”—a word whose etymological basis is the same as divisiveness.

I liked the 1976 coins as well, especially the dollar coin that commemorated two remarkable events. Something I haven’t thought of in a long time was what a friend said in response when I made a remark about the beauty of the full Moon: “It’s ours, you know.”

I don’t usually like to deliberately annoy people, but I still enjoy the memory of the reactions by non-US acquaintances when I used that line on them.

Ironically, we're living under more tyranny today than our Founders had under the British.

April 19, 2025 will be the 250th anniversary of Lexington & Concord. Those were the first battles of the Revolutionary War.

Though we celebrate July 4, 1776 as Independence, the war actually started nearly a year before that.
