WV at the county level have always taxed "personal" property as well as real estate. Personal being vehicles; car, truck, motorcycles, airplane, RV, etc. Personal property tax for me this year is about $500 (real estate about $2,500).
Beginning 2024 we get a State tax credit that comes right off what you owe for income tax in the amount of personal property tax paid. So in essence WV rebates you the amount the county taxes our vehicles.

Also beginning in 2024, vehicle inspections change to every other year rather than yearly.

Another positive step was a year or so back WV exempted firearms and ammunition from WV 6% sales tax.

All this under Republican leadership, while our Democrat Joe Manchin was in DC voting for spending increases.

That’s good news!

A few years ago I went on a cross country trip from New Mexico to Virginia Beach. The highlight of the trip was going through Kentucky and West Virginia. Beautiful land out there!!

The abandoned towns out in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and Colorado were creepy but would make for an excellent place to shoot a horror film.

Yearly tax on your car/truck? That is additional to the inspection fee? Wow!

Yes it was a yearly tax based on the vehicles value. It wouldn't amount to much on an old car or motorcycle but it could on a new ones, or an expensive RV.

Titles are maybe $12 and yearly cost for a license plate is reasonable here though, around $18 for a motorcycle, $48 for a truck. Sales tax is 6% on new or used.

That property tax was the killer, but now it's going away! And the $14 inspection goes to every other year.

When we talk actual real estate property tax Texas seems crazy high, $4,200 every year for a $240,000 home?

Eastern Kentucky and most all of WV are similar terrain to the western side of your state.

NC has the same tax yearly based on vehicle value. Like you said it’s nothing on an old R1 or 1990’s motorcycle but on new cars it’s pretty dang expensive.

I’d love to see my state do something similar to WV!

Plenty of states do that, Kentucky, Kansas for example have property taxes on vehicles, Virginia is the highest at 3.96%

We pay property taxes on vehicles in NH. It's calculated on a similar sliding scale based the value and age of the vehicle. We do NOT pay Income Tax OR Sales Tax though, so ultimately it's a net cost savings resulting in a lower cost of living when compared with the VAST majority of states in this country!

That's great not having to pay sales and income tax in NH! But it looks like they make up for a lot of it with property taxes that are among the highest in the country, $6,000 per year on a median priced home, plus 1.8% on vehicle values.
They get us all one way or another.

Virginia has a PP tax on vehicles, you pay it to the County or City in which the vehicle is garaged, in Fairfax County it is $200-$400/year for most cars. I'm sure some of it goes to the State.

Up until a few decades ago, the personal property upon which you were taxed included such things as home furnishings, and other tangible possessions. The County actually had inspectors who would visit people's homes and assess the value of their possessions so as to establish the tax owed. Assessors would note code violations, neighbors would inform on neighbors, people would hide their art and other valuables when the inspectors came by, it was an ugly situation.

Would the value of the car or truck that VA taxes $200-$400 be $5,000 - $10,000 then?

Because according to the Link HRK listed, VA personal property tax on vehicles is 3.96% or $1,039 on a $26K vehicle.

Here's one I haven't quite figured out yet: my county offers a "discount" on personal property tax for "high mileage" vehicles. Nice, right? It's great for me, with my truck showing over 320k miles. But after some number of years they screw it up for ya then, by disqualifying the high-mileage discount.

I'm not sure yet whether the "it's old" discount is greater or less than the "I run the tar out of it" discount, but on the surface it looks a little funky. Confused

Oh, and I live in the town, so I get to pay taxes to both the town and the county... both of 'em want a piece of the pie.

I'm done grouching... good for you, ridewv! Cool

God bless America.

I'm just glad it's going away. Where we get hit is state income tax but there's been talk of lowering it. We'll see.

Other than a rather high sales tax - as much as 9.975% in some locales - the state of Tennessee has a relatively low tax burden. No income tax, no property tax on vehicles (some counties add on a "wheel tax"), and often suspends sales tax on certain items. Currently there is such a suspension on groceries through Oct. 31st. Recently there was a tax-free weekend for school supplies. In 2022 I took advantage of no sales tax on gun security devices and bought a cabinet for my long guns.

Not exactly, there is also the contributing factor of "personal use vehicle tax relief" that politicians use to make believe that they are not bleeding their constituency dry. The reality is far more complicated than a simple percentage multiplier might suggest.
My figures are based on what I pay on a 2012 Outback and a 2018 Tiguan.

The bald fact is that government is always hungry for more funds. Whether they do more harm collecting these, or spending the gleanings is an exercise for those burdened.

I normally pay $34 for my car license, but last November when I renewed for year 2023, it was $5.50. The tradeoff is that I now have a new license plate that is highly reflective, probably to make it easier for scanners to read.

I see and thank goodness it's not a flat 4% of the value.

egregore yeah TN taxing consumption with a high sales tax but not income makes it very attractive for wealthy people. My friend's wealthy brother is planning on leaving NY for a state with no or very low income tax and TN is on the list.

Taxes here in IL are high and going to go higher.

This was highlighted to me by my brother-in-law who moved to So. Carolina. He was back for a visit recently and told me his property taxes for the year were equal to one month of property taxes here in IL. Eek
