We have a Samsung BDH5100 DVD/Blu-Ray player that gets used almost exclusively for DVD’s from Redbox and our son’s children’s shows DVD’s.

Rented Last Jedi Friday night and all they had was a Blu-ray Disc. It would not play, player kept saying “tray empty” when I hit play. Took it back and tried to get a regular DVD but again all they had was a Blu-ray disc. I got it and decided to try again.

This time I updated the firmware on the player and also did a reset. The second Blu-ray ALSO will NOT play! Do I have a bad player? DVD’s run just fine though.

Any ideas here?

what was the last disk that you were able to play? Try that disk again and see if it plays

You mean Blu-ray disc? It’s been a couple years since I played one last and don’t own any of them.

I may just stick with DVD’s

If you have a PS4 or Xbox try playing it thru there or a neighbor to see if it plays on their Blu Ray.
Just to make sure it's not the disc itself.

I was thinking perhaps a bad sensor to detect the presence of the disk itself due to dust or something

it says no disk in tray rather than bad media

I had one of the original Samsung bluray players, I have no idea on the model number. After many years, I started getting several BluRays that had issues or wouldn’t work at all despite being up to date. DVDs worked fine, but newer movies sometimes had issues. At the time I googled it I got the impression they just were not keeping my player up to date as often as it needed because of its age.

I had a Samsung player do this back in 2010. We had bought it right after our marriage in 2009, and I went out on a Tuesday and grabbed a new-release movie, but when we went to watch it, it didn't read it. I updated the firmware. Called samsung (worst customer service ever) and they said to update the firmware. I did. They had me reset and re-update. still didn't work. the CS lady then said 'well, we're updating all the time so check back later." I asked her when the last update had come out, and she said about a month earlier - so it would probably "be awhile" before the next one.

I went with Sony for Bluray players after that and haven't had any issues.

Samsung's stuff usually works - but when it doesn't, you're just kind of SOL in my experience.

You have my sympathy if Samsung's customer service is the worst. I spent a few hours with Toshiba and never got anywhere. What a mess!

I also had a Samsung that quit playing BluRays and never could get it to work. Bought a Sony player a year or so ago and it works perfectly with anything you throw at it.

Slight thread drift, but will a regular DVD player play a BluRay disc? Albeit without the high quality a BluRay offers?

No. they use different lasers to read the discs, which is often why the Blu-Rays players will still play the older conventional DVDs.
DVD players don't have the blue-laser to read the Blu-ray discs.

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.
