Getting rid of ants
^^^^^^^^^^^
: Termidor SC is not a good option for fire ant control because it can only be used on or immediately adjacent to a structure, it is not labeled to be used out in the yard. ... Both of these are labeled specifically for fire ants and can be used out in the yard as a broadcast or mound treatment

  • Do you have a local source for the Bifenthrin?
Does it need to be watered-in after application?
Yes, Ace Hardware on Rayford sells Nitro-Phos Buh Out Max which is a Houston based fertilizer & horticultural chemical company

Amdro is sold at Lowe’s and some Ace Hardware. They have 2 different products but only one contains Bifenthrin and it’s called Amdro Quick kill lawn insect killer.

As long as we are on the subject of Houston lawns, let me introduce you to 3 things:
  • Randy Lemmon is the preeminent lawn and garden talk radio guru for our area. I started following his schedule after Harvey and it’s converted my lawn and landscape to one of the best on the street for very little work. Most of the products are Houston based and work better than big box store stuff for same or less money.
  • The aforementioned Nitro-Phos
  • MicroLife is a Houston based organic company

Thanks, TT, luckily that Ace is just a mile or so away, since the other one on Rayford closed down.

Thanks for all the great information.
Not sure if they are fire ants. We do have a big problem with them in Florida. I do have stuff for them.
I will be looking at Lowe's tomorrow to see if they have some of the products you have all recommended.
Around the inside of the house I used Boric Acid Powder.with good luck however I am not sure if it can be used outside.
    Once again thanks.

THIS is the stuff that finally ended our ant infestations for good.

Yep, some powerful stuff. Works great all year long. Wear protective gear. Gloves, long sleeves etc. I do the parameter of the house and along the edges of my patio and some adjacent shrubs mid spring and don't have ants or other critters all season long. I'll see some maybe in the lawn and outlaying areas but I hesitate to do a broad treatment as it will kill bees which I do not want to do.

When I built my first home in Texas 30 plus years ago I was having a fire ant problem and a native Texas lady next door to me (~80 years old) told me a simple and safe way to get rid of them...

If you take a shovel full of one pile and put it on top of another mound they will attack each other and by the next day both mounds will be covered with hundreds of dead ants and your problem will be gone for a few months..worked like a charm and no chemicals.

I use Boric Acid Powder inside my home sometimes however can this be used outside? My deck is only covered with a canopy and is open on the sides.

Terro is what we use. It works. It's not an Ace brand, it can be found everywhere, including the grocery store.

In my early days of living near Miami in South Florida, I had my run ins with Fire Ants while working underneath cars in the back year.

I believe it was about that time when I discovered "Saw Grass".....and damn nasty Palmetto Bugs.
