Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
Had a blast at a new area outdoor range today. Had a few interesting events though. My son managed to shoot our range bag for one, which was funny to everyone but him. Using it as a prop when shooting his AR and his muzzle got too close to an open side. Probably put 200 rounds down range in that with open sights to let him get a good feel. He had a good time. We shot a good bit of .22 also, mostly at steel. But the 9mm…oh boy did we have a mess there. I was trying to shoot up the last of the 9mm I had bought during covid when we did a group buy here on the forum. Well, Gen 4 Glock 17 that I had just bought from my brother in law. Maybe the second mag of shooting it and my son had a failure to eject. Locked up real good. So moved on to my Glock 19 which ran like a top. Switched to my Sig P365 and promptly got a damn squib, which I absolutely did not notice but after 4 failure drills with the rounds not chambering I tossed it to the side for other guns, blaming it mentally on the ammo. Came home later and felt like a dummy, but knocked the round out fairly easily. Finally had to give up when my G19 front sight came loose. I had installed the sights a few years ago and haven’t checked them for a bit. Wellll, about 300 rounds loosened it. Of course I didn’t have the tool with me, so that led to the end of the day. We managed about 3 hours of shooting. Back to the G 17. I beat the casing out of it earlier and was surprised to find it looked perfectly fine. When I went to cycle the slide it acted like it was stuck about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way closed. So, naturally, I let the slide fall with the slide release and she was back to being proper stuck again. I haven’t messed with it anymore. I’ll probably see if one of our armorers at work can take a look. But that damn thing is STUCK. I really beat the hell out of it earlier to get it open, thinking the case had expanded too much or something. Any ideas? Maybe the recoil spring got fouled up or something? I’ve inspected it and compared it to another and I can’t see anything that is visibly different. And the gun is all stock. ************** Update: Buddy got it apart and determined the barrel was bulged 0.008 of an inch (I think that’s the right decimal spot). Just enough that the slide was binding up. So it was a squib. Looking back, I do remember hearing a distinctly different sound when my son was shooting it, but it was an active range and the other rounds being fired masked it. Next round pushed the bullet out but damaged the barrel. A new barrel installed and good to go! Also had him install my new sights while he was at it.This message has been edited. I have sent my one Glock for repair. No charge but no explanation of the problem. A call to Glock and the service department would not comment. It was the Glock 42 and it ran fine after that. Good luck.

If it makes him feel any better, tell him I did the same damn thing, and not when I was kid, either. I was a whole, grown-ass forty years old when I blew apart the side of my favorite pistol bag with the muzzle blast of my Bren 2, using it as a rest on a range trip earlier this year. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

What range did you go to? I moved a couple years back and haven't found a good replacement for the one I moved away from This is where my signature goes.

That rug really tied the room together. |
If you had a squib in the Sig, maybe you had one in the Glock too? Barrel bulge? Broken frame tab can jam it up tight too. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

Highly suspect you had a squib with the Glock and bulged the barrel.

Fighting the good fight |
At least it's better/less expensive than the guy I know who put a hole through his truck bed side while sighting in a hunting rifle, using the other side of the bed as a rifle rest. It's a good reminder that just because an obstacle isn't obscuring your sights/optic doesn't mean your muzzle is clear of the obstacle.

I know a guy who did that to his chronograph screens with my .300 Win Mag. He's lucky he didn't take out the timing unit as well! I’d suspect your son didn’t recognize a squib round and sent a second round down a blocked barrel. Super easy to check. If you can field strip the pistol, try putting the muzzle end of the barrel down the end of the slide from the muzzle. They taught this in my armorer’s class as a routine check for bulged barrels. If it turns out to be bulged that’s a testament to Glocks barrels.

I'll add my vote to the possible bulged barrel from a squib. If you got one with the Sig, it's not outside the realm of possibility that it happened in the Glock too and went unnoticed. I ran into a lot more ammo issues than normal during the post-covid stupidity. Companies were struggling to keep up with demand and I think QC took a hit as a result.

This may be more common than we think. My late older brother did something similar. Why is the truck rocking?

One of my friends that is a Glock armorer is going to take a look at it this week. It’s still frozen though. No way to take it apart, not sure what the heck he’s gonna do with it. My range bag wears a 5.56mm hole in one corner. Not sure where it came from though... _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama
