If you want to use a gun, a pellet gun with lead pellets, not alloy, will have the least chance of ricochet or damage to the home. If you use a pump, you can adjust the velocity to just enough to suit your purpose. If I remember correctly from my youth, you can feed a standard lead pellet backwards into the chamber, and create a hollow point projectile that maintains pretty good accuracy. Much like loading wad cutters backwards. Maybe experiment with some pieces of chicken to find the right velocity.

Granddad loaded shotshells with dry rice, so as not to scar up the rafters too badly.

Grandmom didn' t much appreciate the process.

Mrs. Mike and I were walking out to the garage one evening when she was opening the door to the garage and yelled, mouse mouse mouse and slammed the door.

Well I pulled her out of the fatal funnel, grabbed a broom, and entered the arena.

Said mouse was doing his best to run across the rim of the brickwork that was about two feet up from the floor. I managed to engage him about three feet from the corner and gave him A hearty whack.

He did not make it.

After disposing of his dead carcass, I washed my hands and explained to Mrs, Mike that she shouldn’t stand in the way of something that deserves deadly force, nor should she close the door and allow me to do what I do best…..kill.

Unadulterated death.

But back to the point, 22lr shotshell will work so will 38/357, but I would hold back on the 2 3/4” 12 ga in #8s or higher (that’s a little too much- like killing hogs with an 88mm German gun)

Personally I have a .22 revolver with rat shot for that purpose...

They do work very well around here also, the preferred ammo is Skippy.

 
I use a S&W 617 (10 shot revolver), loaded with CCI .22LR shot shells, for rattlesnakes and those large Bufo toads. I am sure it would work well with mice. The rattlesnakes almost always need only one shot to the head, toads center mass.

Having seen a few bucket trap vids on the Utube, they seem very effective if set up right. Mice get one shot and don’t seem to live long enough to learn how to avoid certain death.

Can you afford to replace everything in the house that you break as the pellet whizzes past the mouse and impacts your home?

S&W Model 63-5, loaded with rat shot. Instant, merciful death, with little to no collateral damage. It won't penetrate drywall but it can leave a little scarring.

Glue Traps?

Put out glue traps one time and found the biggest rat I ever saw walking around the barn with a glue trap stuck to its foot.

I’ve seen backyard .22 shots slip like a rock on a lake. So depending on your surrounding area, a BB or pellet gun would be a better option.

No field mice or similar issues here at mi casa but my neighbor loaned out her cat Smokey to an acquaintance a few weeks back to handle a "mouse in da house" situation. Eradication occurred the first night.

Yeah I enjoy my pellet rifles/pistols but no way would I fire them inside my house.

See if you have friends with cats who could help you out.

This is what I ordered: Victor M250SSR-2 Indoor Electronic Humane Mouse Trap - No Touch, No See Electric Mouse Trap . It works.

The Generic Mouse Trap Chambers are $1.74 each so I don't have to touch the mice or reuse the chamber.

Do you have a .22 revolver? Aguila Colibri primer only rounds will definitely do for the mice but you didn't mention if it's indoors or out.

.22 Colibri rounds will also work in a semiauto .22 pistol... You just have to manually work the slide after each shot. And they're not ideal for .22 rifles, since they can end up as squibs in a longer rifle barrel.

I used a Ruger .22/45 loaded with Colibri rounds to dispatch the occasional possum at my last house. Worked well for ~10 yard headshots.

It's quieter than a true .22 load, but still a gunshot. So may not be ideal for indoor use.
