Ridiculous.

Although I wouldn't mind not having to drive the little one to school in the morning. Here is the forecast for Park City tomorrow morning. Gonna be around -2 when it's time to head out the door. Thank God I at least have a heated garage. I haven't put the hardtop back on the Jeep yet. Ugh

They are not closed for snow, they are closed because those warm temps that were melting off are gonna freeze overnight and turn the roads to ice. If you wanna risk your children's lives on the capabilities of other drivers, be my guest. I'm happy my kids will be staying home.

Snow is one thing. Highway ice skating rinks are quite the other. It's always this in between seasons that are the most treacherous, when it goes below freezing to above to below again, it's never a good thing. Tomorrow is gonna be one big shit show on the roads.

I grew up in Wisconsin like bigeinkcmo. I don’t ever remember a snow day. I can remember some deep, deep snow. Nobody had 4 wheel drive or even front wheel drive in the 60’s. A different time I guess.

Snow in WI and snow in CO are vastly different. As bigeinkcmo mentioned, this is an unusual early storm. The ground is not frozen yet and still has a lot of latent heat. Plus the sun coming out in the afternoon helps to melt some of the snowfall. As the snow continues to fall tonight it will also melt until the sun goes down and the temps begin to drop.
Once that happens, the snow melt is gonna turn to ice and then pile fresh snowfall on top of it. Come morning, you will have a complete sheet of ice, with inches of snow on top of it. There will be zero traction and getting out of your house will be a nightmare. I have 300 feet of driveway myself that i will have to plow before anyone even thinks of leaving.
So you have all these wx conditions and there are thousands of people driving vehicles without proper tires. Then add in that there is not a straight mile anywhere in the state that does not have decent hills to navigate up and down and the whole thing turns into a catastrophe.

My wife almost got Tboned going through our small town as someone came down a side street with all 4 tires locked up, just sliding down the hill. CDOT is telling people to stay off the roads. The sheriff's are telling people to stay off the roads. The talking heads are saying to stay off the roads. How much more will it take?

Last year during a similar storm there were over 100 cars crashed in the ditch in a 5 mile stretch between our town and the next one over. Our neighbors were out on skidoos and tractors trying to rescue idiots who didn't heed the warning.

^^^^Agree 100%

Icy roads, new snow, lots of cars, impatient drivers. No thanks.

Should make for a different Halloween this year. Expect it'll be super cold, with snow still on the ground.

Weather Alert

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather warning lasting through Wednesday for much of Colorado including northern and central mountain areas, the I-70 corridor, and front range/eastern plains areas. Significant snowfall and cold temperatures are making roads icy. Chain and Traction Laws are in place throughout the state. The heaviest snow and largest impacts are expected to begin Tuesday afternoon. Anticipated 4-6 inches overnight of snow for Denver and the surrounding areas throughout the storm. Expect icy conditions and snow packed pavements. Roads will be slick even with plowing and treatment. CDOT recommends delaying Wednesday, October 30th morning travel until after the normal commute hours if possible.

But by all means, if you think it's just some snow storm, go on out.

We don't really have weather these days. Used to be, we had an NFL game they called the freezer bowl where temps were below zero. It was fun, got the jeeps out and went riding. Best buddy got semi rich pulling people out of the ditch (or whatever they managed to crash against). All you needed was a Jeep and a little ability to drive it.

Moved along to what we considered proper tires. Bought cheap snow tires and put studs in them. All 4 and in each hole. It was ugly when it warmed up. Sparks all over and studs don't like stopping. But the only thing better was chains on all 4 corners. Kind of did the other drivers a favor because chains tear up any ice that may be around.

But just like Kali, no one really expect you to show up at work. Even the cops expected you to stay home. Back then I worked at a dairy. We had contracts with the local hospitals, and they wanted/needed milk. I drove my wife who was a nurse to the hospital. Cops can't really catch you because they drove junk city vehicles and most hadn't a clue how to drive. I then went to work. We pulled the back seat out and loaded the jeep up with mild. Dispensers, not bottled. When I got to Children's Hospital, the cops caught up with me. They asked why I thought I was special out playing on the roads. I just pointed at the milk in the back and asked if they wanted to deliver it for us. They lost their attitude and let me go. Doesn't matter what the roads are like, kids need milk.

Now you guys with a reputation for bad weather get a taste of bad. If the "authorities" tell you to stay home, you can do it without guilt. Except kids still need milk. And eggs and cottage cheese. And the Union didn't make a fuss out of me delivering. When the Unions start exhibiting common sense, you know its bad.

I was in grade school and high school in SE WI from 1976-1986 and we had many snow days. At least three a year. We'd get up early and listen to WTMJ to hear if our district was closed. I then went to UW-Waukesha earned an associate's degree and UW-Whitewater and earned my bachelor's degree. I commuted to both schools and they to closed several times each winter due to snow. However, closures were not based on 2" of snow, more like 8". We had icy roads as well. Black ice was particularly exciting.

There were plenty of 4x4s, especially the people how plowed drive ways.

Maybe because people realized driving in ice and snow is dangerous and it's better to close schools and keep cars off the road?

Although every fall/early winter demonstrates that some people can’t handle our normal snowy road conditions, for the most part Colorado drivers do okay. A few days ago at the start of this storm system, though, I was astonished to find myself sliding sideways at the first curve I came to. In the D.C. area or Germany after a bit of snow? Sure, but in Colorado? Icy, truly slippery roads are a rarity here, and what people aren’t experienced with, and especially what they don’t expect, will get them in trouble.

And I’m always a little amused by the aggressively proud, “We never close,” claims. A couple of years back our county Emergency Manager requested the schools close for the day due to heavy snow conditions that had 4WD SUVs stuck all over the place, and you’d think he’d publicly declared that women should be married before having children. I’m always reminded of the “I never clean my guns,” boasts. Okay, don’t clean your guns and brave those icy roads that are populated by people who have no experience driving on them and who get into crashes on sunny summer days; best of luck to you with both.

We’re currently at 4* here in SE Wyoming. They’re forecasting 22 for a high today, so the deep freeze temps since Monday night appear to be moving out of the area; it stayed in single digit temperatures all day yesterday.

Monday I was westbound on I-80. Temps hovered around 28* all the way across Nebraska. As I got near North Platte I encountered snow. It was falling pretty heavily, but the highway seemed to be pretty good. Then we came to a bridge over the Platte River. An SUV pulling a UHaul lost control on the slick bridge and an older woman traveling alone couldn’t avoid hitting them. I had concerns about getting my pickup shut down in time to avoid the wreck too; it all happened right in front of me.

I was able to avoid the accident and as I drove by the woman who hit the SUV and trailer, I saw that her airbags had deployed. I got myself off the bridge and pulled over on the west side of it. I called 911 and told the dispatcher about the accident and bag deployment. My certification is expired, but I have had EMT training and I walked back to render assistance, keeping the 911 dispatcher on the line. 61 YO woman, bloody nose, complaining of chest pain, right knee pain and right wrist pain—with the exception of the knee, all consistent with air bag deployment. Seemed like it took quite awhile for emergency responders to get there, I was probably there the better part of 30 minutes. I think she’ll be fine though.

Moral of the long story, when the sign says, “Bridges may be icy,” it may indeed be true.
