Who do we like for black wool / fur / beaver outback style hats
As the thread title says I’m looking for a winter, rain resistant hat that is sort of a western crossover or outback style hat.

I’ve been looking primarily at Stetson but I’m not familiar with other brands. Below is a link to a Stetson Bozeman, which may be perfect for me but I want to consider beaver fur / mix hats.

My price range is $200 +/- but not for the sake of spending more money. I’m interested in low maintenance from a rain perspective with an occasional brushing.

I won’t be wearing it with a suit but anything from a Filson to Jean jacket to whatever.

Crushable hats I can take or leave.

Thanks for your help.

I wear Cabelas Lite Felt outback hats. I have a summer one and a winter one with.... Ear flaps!
But now Cabelas has cheapened everything up since the merger with Bass Pro, If I replace my hats it will be Stetson.
My hat vendor is Village Hat Shop.

Baileys is another good hat. You can see them at Fedoras.com

The Australian maker, Akubra. They make a nice all-fur felt hat in lots of styles. Mostly Aussie/outback styles, but some Western hats and more traditional fedoras. Fur felt is very rain resistant. Theirs are mostly rabbit, but they are good quality hats.

These folks are in Australia, but ship to the US. There are American sellers, but they have lesser selections. American sellers, last time I checked, have much higher prices, even taking shipping into account.

Stay away from wool felt. It is second rate as compared to fur felt - wool felt is not rainproof at all. Rabbit is nice, but beaver is better. Some fur felts will blend the two.

Another Akubra fan. Have a pair of original circa 2007 Riverina models [Fawn 3" (76mm) brim, 4.3" (110mm) crown, bound edge, lined]. Wearing mine in my Avatar. Big Grin It gets a lot of compliments. The model was discontinued and then brought back a few years ago but with different dimensions and features. Much, much prefer the original.

Closest models these days are (various colors):
--Lawson 76mm, 105mm, bound edge, lined
--Angler 76mm, 107mm, cut edge, lined
--Banjo Paterson 2.75", 4", raw edge, lined
--Traveller 76mm, 110mm, welt edge, unlined

I like several of the Akubra hats but black ones seem to be special order. I’ll keep looking.
Good suggestions so far. Thanks!

I have an Akubra that I got in Sydney in the late 80's. Great hat!

I have a Drizabone (also Aussie) Topender.

Have had it, along with a Brumby jacket, for the past 12 years or so. Reapply the wax every five years and your are dry as a bone. Wink

Good deal! Smile

And thanks for posting a follow up. I am always amazed at threads where folks ask for help / opinions / input and never post what they ended up doing. Again thanks! Big Grin
