I’ve never had to look into this before so I have no idea how this quote looks. I was going to get a couple local estimates but this one seems to look fair. $288 + tax for a 28x44 *glass only* double-pane pop-in replacement. I just want to make sure I’m not getting totally ripped off. EDIT: here’s a picture highlighting what’s being replaced: _______________ Mind. Over. Matter.

I'm pretty sure you can get a brand new top quality window for less than $400.

FWIW, generally commercial grade 1" IG's made with 1/4" low E - 1/2" Air - 1/4" have a wholesale cost around 8-10$ per Sq.ft. when bought in volume. Your quote has a residential IG (probably 3/4" made with 1/8" low-E -1/2" air - 1/8") costing 33.75 per square foot. Granted, that's retail for a one-off but it still seems high to me. If its tempered glass, it would be more understandable since tempering about doubles the cost of glass. At the manufacturing end, I would expect a cost basis around 4-6$ per Sq.ft. in volume (depending on the grade of low_E coating. You could almost buy the same window in the same frame size for less and just pull the glass from it to re-glaze the window in your house. Full disclosure, I work at the manufacturing end of the supply chain and windows typically get stepped on twice before they get to the retail end. MFG > Wholesaler > Retailer > Consumer Ken

just a second thought, you can probably get the make and size info for the window from the AAMA label. this will be a silver or gold foil label on the head jamb you can see with the window opened. The CPD number can be tracked back to the manufacturer via www.aamanet.org website. you'd be looking for the Certified Products Directory link on the consumer side of the website. The window will also have a designation like R-PG30-C 800 x 1500 (30 x 60) Translated Residential - performance grade 30 - casement 800mm x 1500mm (30 in x 60"). The grade and size may be different depending on the product. performance grade is just the design structural test pressure pg30 = 30 lbs per sq.ft. (psf). I mention this because you may be able to go directly to the manufacturer and buy a glazed replacement sash if you are willing to do the work yourself and swap out the hardware. Just ask them to do the hardware prep. (casement hardware is 1/3 the cost of the window and you already own that). Ken

My window had a lifetime warranty. {I had condensation between the panes.} I had to pay shipping which was a hundred bucks. The hardware was essentially the same so installation was not difficult.

Interesting timing. I was looking at a window full of condensation while eating dinner tonight and thought to myself. Wonder how I go about getting that fixed and how much. I’ll look for that sticker tomorrow and see what I can find. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Interesting timing... my fogged up window is 95” by 54”. Naturally it’s the biggest window in the house. We’re waiting for the glass company to come out.
