The OP has identified the text as coming from The Book of Enoch. Specifically, this text is from Book 1.

Reading the preface of several published versions, there are many symbols used in translations of this book.



Given that the book is translated from ancient language, different sources, etc. I wonder if this symbol is found in the opening of the OPs book, and indicates something similar.

It's a proportional font done on a computer or typewriter with that functionality. Not monospaced like old-school typesetting.

[Sidenote - Powerline Blog Wink]

Typewriters with proportional fonts don't have that character (that I know of).

So I will say it's an ASCII or Unicode character. I guess that code was added when the font was created, and it was a typo that dropped it in. (When you create a font, you can create these characters and assign a code to them to display them.)

This has long fell by the wayside except for duplicating very old texts, manuscripts and poetry stuff.
I had to load a superscript to get this symbol.
