The guy I worked with at the local Chevrolet dealer in college mentioned that people were scared of the 8.1, assuming it'd be a guzzler.
Paired with the Allison trans, he said they did better than you'd expect for the size.

Don't think it was offered in the Suburban, though.


I get 12-13 highway and 9-10 around the city. Not horrible for a 496. It breaks the tires loose very easily. Have to be careful on wet roads if I don't have Autotrack running.

Fairly reliable, I used all full 100% synthetic fluids in it.
In a crash, you have no worries.

I owned a 2007 LTZ from 2011 at 88K miles to 2018 at 280+K miles.

The truck was fairly solid. Engine was good, transmission was good. Really, I could have kept it, but I wanted a new one.

The AFM did come on 2007, I had it. Didn't bother me, but then I was not towing anything.

That motor is known for eating oil. In the beginning I would pour in 2 quarts between oil changes, which was about 7,500 miles. Then the rear main seal started to go, so it started to leak some oil. Eventually, the 2 quarts between changes became 4 quarts between changes. And replacing that rear main seal was an $1,100 job at my independent mechanic. And I do not know if even a good home mechanic can do that job. It requires dropping the 4x4 driveshaft, the transmission and motor. Of that $1,100, only about $150-$200 was parts. The rest was labor.

I had the power running boards. I loved them at first. Then one side broke. Then a few years later, the other side. Those things cost nearly $2,000 for both sides.

Other than those two major things, it was standard stuff like oil changes, transmission fluid changes, tires, etc.
