I’ve seen similar F-22 photos before, but there’s a good collection in this article.

Beautiful pictures. That article and captions were childlike in their descriptions though. “Vapes, capes, and streamers”. Never heard those terms used to describe what was pictured. Plus one caption implied the fighter flew between the radio towers on top of the building. Come on.

The Air and Water Show was one of the few things I liked about living in Chicago. I lived right downtown near the beach and it was always super cool watching those jets fly low around the city from my roof deck. Loud as hell too. The sound of freedom.

For the record, they don't actually fly "between" the antenna masts of the Hancock Tower.

I love air shows. I've been annoyed at so-called "journalists" for years.

Creating a storm! Clouds form on the wings of F-22 Raptors as they dart across the Chicago waterfront and weave between skyscrapers

Rolling eyes...

Totally sorry for the thread drift. As an apology, here's what IMO is the best photo is of the collection. Bummer it was not a blue sky day, but still love air shows.

I worked in an brand new office building in Hampton Virginia that was under the flight approach to Langley AFB. That was when the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing was flying F-15s and right before they converted to F-22s. The sound proofing standards for buildings in that area jumped way up right after our building was finished. As it was, we could hear an F-15 when it flew over the building, but not greatly. When F-22s flew over, we couldn't hear who we were talking to on the phone. The F-22 was way louder than the F-15.

The F-22 had some teething problems, but fewer than the F-35. Even the simplest version, the F-35A.

Saw one fly a few years back at the Andrews Air Show. The ability of those planes to turn with the thrust vectoring was impressive.

I volunteer at an airshow each year. My group is near the medical tents. One of the medical groups has doctors both active and retired from practice.

We've had the F-22 perform several times. I saw it the first day of the airshow the first time - on the second day, a doctor I know was on duty at one tent - she is a retired Navy flight surgeon. I advised her to step out and watch the F-22 - her reply was along the lines of "I've seen so many airplanes", but she went out anyway. The pilot did part of the "falling leaf" maneuver. The doctor's expression was priceless.

The F-22 has vectored thrust. During the above maneuver, the plane will appear to be fluttering down in a nose-down configuration without accelerating in the descent. Quite impressive.

Our airshow is coming up in less than six weeks. I'll have to check and see if it will be there this year.

A little known fact is that the F-22 is capable of farting rainbows.

Great photos, terrible description of what’s happening with the vapor cloud around the transonic aircraft.
Try this:

quote:
A vapo(u)r cone, also known as shock collar or shock egg, is a visible cloud of condensed water that can sometimes form around an object moving at high speed through moist air, for example, an aircraft flying at transonic speeds. When the localized air pressure around the object drops, so does the air temperature. If the temperature drops below the saturation temperature, a cloud forms.

In the case of aircraft, the cloud is caused by expansion fans decreasing the air pressure, density and temperature below the dew point. Then pressure, density and temperature suddenly increase across the stern shock wave associated with a return to subsonic flow behind the aircraft. Since the local Mach number is not uniform over the aircraft, parts of the aircraft may be supersonic while others remain subsonic — a flight regime called transonic flight.

In addition to making the shock waves themselves visible, water condensation can also occur in the trough between two crests of the shock waves produced by the passing of the object. However, this effect does not necessarily coincide with the acceleration of an aircraft through the speed of sound or Mach 1.[1]
