Collins is up for reelection in 2020 (Maine).

She is one of just two Senate Republicans up for reelection in 2020 who represents a state won by Hillary Clinton in 2016 (the other is Colorado’s Cory Gardner)

Last Thursday Sen Manchin (D) endorsed GOP Sen. Susan Collins for reelection

“I would go up and campaign for Susan Collins. If she wanted me to, I would campaign for Susan Collins", Manchin said

Manchin also said he was thinking about running for KY WV governor in 2020.

On the same day, Susan Rice announced she would not challenge Collins for the seat.

"I was deeply disappointed when Susan Collins decided to vote for Brett Kavanaugh,” Rice said at the 10th Annual Women in the World Summit in New York. “It felt like a betrayal, frankly, to all women, and it made me think very seriously about whether I ought to run for Senate in 2020.”

But Rice said she was not ready to move her family to Maine full time and did not want to put them through the stress of a campaign.

I dislike Collins, but it is important for Republicans to hold this seat.

In 2020, there are 34 senate seats up for reelection. 22 of those are presently held by Republicans.

I'll bite - what are a carpetbagger's odds in Maine, generally?

Hopefully Susan Rice will be on trial before that.

No, but I'd rather see his seat held by the GOP. He'd probably make a pretty good gov.

He was the governor of WV from 2005-2010; he did well enough I suppose. And I think we’d all like to see a clearly red state be led by the GOP.

Manchin is a huge 'nothing'. The man believes in nothing, and will swing in whatever direction he thinks will best serve his interests in remaining at the government trough. Personally, I'm more interested in the GOP picking up additional seats in 2020 rendering Susan Collins even more irrelevant than she is today.

Manchin is on record as supporting an Assault Weapons Ban and 10-round magazine limit after the Sandyhook school shooting.

I'm not close to him at all but I've known Joe for 40 years or so both personally and as a business competitor. He comes across as an honest and caring man. I've found him less than honest but very caring......... about Joe. Bigdeal is spot on Joe blows with the wind. Having said this we could probably do worse but we could also do a lot better. He'll be holding a political office in WV for as long as he decides to.

Have you ever spoken to him about his support of gun control?

No I have not. I Imagine he'd say something like;

"Ride there are a lot of politicians out here that want guns to go away but you know I'm 100% for the second amendment, heck I have guns myself, but we have to do something rational about guns before the extreme left does something irrational about them like outlawing guns. There's no need for 30 or 50 round magazines for hunting, target shooting, or even defense, so that's why I support banning them. We need to do something." (Meaning I need to do something to be able to tell one audience "I'm pro-gun" while another "I'm all in favor for reasonable gun control".

Pretty spot-on, ridewv.
I, too, have known Joe for quite some time, to the same degree you have. Socially, for the most part. A little professionally. You pretty much nailed it.
ETA: Joe was at his political best when he was governor, in my opinion.
