What if you held a gun confiscation and an entire province says "no"; Kenney Commands Alberta RCMP to Ignore Trudeau’s Gun Laws

The Government of Alberta has sent instructions to the RCMP K-Division, the arm of the federal police force with authority in Alberta, to ignore direct orders from the federal Trudeau Government.

In a bid for assistance with the firearm confiscation program, federal Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino issued a direct request for support from the Kenney government in Alberta.

“I am writing to seek your support in implementing the buyback program,” Mendicino pleaded in a secret letter to Alberta’s government. He added that his office would be working directly with policing authorities to successfully implement the “buyback program.”

To make a long story short, the Alberta government declined.

Alberta’s Minister of Justice, Tyler Shandro announced today in a press conference that he will obstruct the gun grab by any means necessary. His office, in a coordinated response to Trudeau, issued orders to the K-Division expressly directing them to ignore federal orders on the matter.

Ignoring Federal Orders

“Alberta is not legally obligated and will not offer any provincial resources to the Federal Government as it seeks to confiscate lawfully acquired firearms,” Tyler Shandro shot back at the federal government today [emphasis in original].

“The decision to ban over 1,500 models of different firearms, simply because the “style” of the firearm was deemed to be aesthetically displeasing, is offensive and suggests to us that you are uninterested in meaningfully addressing gun crime,” the response reads.

“Further, I am concerned that federal officials have indicated that they will direct the RCMP to participate in the confiscation program. I am advising you that I am disputing such direction or intention to take such direction, as outlined in Article 23.0 of the Provincial Police Service Agreement.”

“Finally, preliminary estimates suggest that you will need to confiscate over 30,000 firearms in Alberta alone. We believe that Public Safety Canada does not have the capacity, wherewithal, or the resources to seriously attempt this effort. And, much like the long gun registry, we believe your efforts will fail in the face of opposition from the public.”

Commands to the Alberta RCMP

The blow to Trudeau didn’t stop there, as orders were dispatched to the K-Division headquarters at the same moment.

“I am writing to formally advise you that the confiscation program is not an objective, priority or goal of the province or the Provincial Police Service, and nor is such deployment ‘… appropriate to the effective and efficient delivery of police services…,’” Minister Shandro wrote to Deputy Commissioner Zablocki.

“Despite taking this step, I remain concerned that the Federal Government will direct the RCMP K-Division to serve as confiscation agents. To prevent this from happening, I am disputing such direction or intention to take such direction, as outlined in Article 23.0 of the Provincial Police Service Agreement,”

Outrage over Trudeau’s plans

The executive order issued by Trudeau will inevitably criminalize firearms owners in huge numbers, spurring many legal firearms owners to speak out.

Despite the ban, which was issued nearly 900 days ago, “violent criminals continue to shoot up our cities [and] illicit guns still flow across our borders to gangs,” said firearms advocate Tracey Wilson.

Trudeau unilaterally issued a deadline of October 30th for any gun identified by his political staff to be turned in to the closest RCMP detachment.

The Government of Alberta has also announced that it will be joining a lawsuit against Trudeau’s proposed gun grab.

Boom!

I'd say that's a put up, or shut up moment. The Trudeau regime was apparently expecting docile meek compliance from the citizens to make gun confiscation work, and instead they ran into a province with balls.

Hopefully the Alberta Minister of Justice and gun owners have watched Red Dawn and will next yell

It’s Alberta… Might as well damn-near be Texas. Wink

As I understand it, Alberta is the only province that pays more taxes to Ottawa than they receive in Federal benefits. And that this, and the consequent growing tax burden on Alberta residents have spawned a seperatist "secede from Canada" movement. Keep pushing Castrudeau, maybe the US will see a 51st State.

Alberta has always marched to the beat of its own drummer - mostly because it’s oil and gas industry allowed it to do so. I lived there during the reign of King Ralph Klein and it was fun to watch.

Not the first time in Canada. Remember C-96? 26 years ago Canadian Parliament passed legislation requiring licensing of all gun owners, registration of all firearms, strict controls on ammunition.

A group called LUFA formed (Law-Abiding Unregistered Firearms Association), led multiple efforts of several years.

1. Last day allowed for licensing and registrations, thousands of Canadians descended on government offices, took every parking space for blocks around, queued up in lines by the thousands. Bureaucrats overwhelmed, shut down, sent every one home. People signed statements for each other attesting to the fact that each had attempted to comply, but government refused to perform the duties.

2. Next step, government mandated licensing and registration by mail using a 3-part form with registration fee mailed in. LUFA advised completing the forms, purchasing a postal MO, keep your copies, destroy the rest. No way the government could prove you had not complied.

3. LUFA public rallies in major cities, thousands attending, large displays of unregistered firearms, and a rallying cry of "COME AND ARREST US".

4. Canadian equivalent of a "freedom of information act" demand for government records showed that after 5 years there was less than 5% compliance and the cost was more than 100 times the amount claimed. Also, government records showed that less than 10% of the registrations received had been processed or entered into the system.

C-96 was subsequently overturned as a failure and unenforceable.

Our neighbors in Canada know exactly how to deal with these things. I have no doubts about the outcome.

Educate me on how Canadian gov works, a provincial govt is able to direct a Federal agency on what it can/cannot do or, is this a statement of position?

Alberta contracts the RCMP to work as provincial police and in many locations as municipal police. They are federally employed but contracted to the province.
Yesterday’s announcement was to point out to the feds that Alberta sets the policing agenda not Ottawa. All police will enforce laws. But the duty of collecting, storing, cataloging and destroying firearms will not be paid for by the province. The feds will need to pay those costs themselves.

I like this. Boom, the truth. Although it should have read crime using guns rather than gun crime. People do crimes, not guns.

Diggit. Justine obviously thought he'd just naturally roll over everyone like he did the truckies. There's a problem with that, Justine - in this case cooperation from the provincial government makes all the difference in the world and getting that active cooperation is worlds different from inducing passivity on the part of individual private citizens.

Now let's see if Trudeau can bully a provincial government the way he did a bunch of working class joes!

History connotes that you only need 30% of the population to take over entire country, because 60% will always comply with tyranny.

And that only happens when the public is not united. If the public is united as one against overreach by government there is nothing government can do about it. Government only governs via "consent of the governed". When that consent is revoked by the population, government is powerless to accomplish anything.

This is exactly how countries fail when the government is so out of touch and totalitarian in nature. We're seeing the exact same phenomenon happening here in the US.
