One of my back-up drives bit the dust yesterday. It's O.K. as it had a nice long run. WD made drive.

I need to replace it now ASAP as it is integral to the back-up scheme.

What do you recommend with a decent MTBF figure in 2 TB or maybe larger? Spinner or SSD. What brands do you like?

Thanks,

RMD

I bought mine from Costco, Seagate, 5TB but it's not SSD. Costco online has SanDisk SSD 2TB for 110 and 4TB for 210.

I think they've been around and have the technology down pat.

I've been running this 4TB Seagate from Amazon for a couple of years as a backup disk. It's been working fine and is currently a Black Friday deal for $99. If I needed another one, I'd buy it again.

As someone who's had to reload from backup on a HDD and never wanting to spend 3 hours doing it over again, I very much recommend getting an SSD enclosure and a SSD. If you're on Amazon Prime, there's multiple USB 3.2 enclosures and 2 GB SSDs that are on sale and have same day delivery.

I've had better luck with WD (Western Digital) over Seagate over the years.

For backup drives I buy HDD's over SSD's and I buy bare drives and put it in my own case. You can buy a case for like $20.

I have long preferred WD spinners, but nearly all SSDs will outperform any hard drive. At the 2TB capacity, I'd definitely go with SSD, and more and more with an M.2 PCI/NVMe drive (assuming hardware compatibility/adaptability). I don't think I'd buy a spinner at this time unless it was an element of a RAID array.

Another thing is that USB is, IMHO, an inadequate interface for reliable backup purposes, especially for bus-powered external chassis. Way too susceptible to intermittent power fluctuations and "disconnection." Avoid USB as a connection strategy.

Finally, choose a file system for the backup volume that has integral error detection/correction. The worst time to find out that your backup has unrecoverable errors is when you have to use it to recover a failed working volume.

Of course, backup is important, but it should not be your first or only choice for seeking to ensure data integrity. Spending your money on backup is often less impactful than making sure your primary storage is solid and reliable.

I got a 2 TB Fantom SSD; but it's because it has a Thunderbolt 3 and 4 connection for my Mac. Much faster than USB.

I recent replaced my 1 TB photo archive portable SSD with a Crucial 4 TB SSD. Pluses for the new drive is it's Thunderbolt4 and very small in addition to providing more space.

The speed difference between an older USB-3a drive and a new drive with thunderbolt 4 is huge. I'll also note that in order to utilize these higher speed ports new high speed cables are required and those are NOT cheap. Fail to replace your stone age cables and you'll be stuck with stone age speeds. Learned that lesson the hard way, used a 4 foot cable on my desktop and it took over 2 hours to move 500 Gb of files to the new drive but the 6 inch high speed cable I got with the new SSD loaded to my laptop which has thunderbolt 4 ports downloaded from the new drive in about 20 minutes. BTW I replaced that antique 4 footer with a 60 Gb/sec. and that has really sped up downloads from my camera or the new Cfexpress card reader.

I've stopped counting.

The thing to remember is that most external drives will be faster than the connection to the machine.

Try to get a USB-C drive if you can as you get more throughput from drive to machine.

My take is that they're all suspect at reasonable price points. So you need at least two copies at all times, and you need to keep them up to date and make sure you notice when one fails and get it replaced.

Or buy some sort of NAS and let it do it for you. Make sure the alert emails work.
