Wife, I, and daughter signed some papers today related to the Air Guard.
We had to meet with the local Air Guard recruiter today and sign some papers for my daughter to get the ball rolling for MEPS and her ASVAB’s. About a week after that they she will do her swearing in. She is 17 and will graduate from high school this coming spring. She has done a couple tours where she dreams of working and has gone out there in a drill weekend following around with the job she wants to do. She even got to go in the simulator and give some refueling g a shot with an instructor/trainer. She wants to be a boom operator on the refuelers. The recruiters aren’t telling her no for that job so that’s a good sign so far. I believe that have an opening with that job.

I asked her why she wants to join. She said her grandpa a great uncle and a cousin were in this unit, she wants to serve our country, and she doesn’t want a student loan for college.

We are proud of her.

One of my best friends did four years in the Army, decided he liked military service, but was advised to move over to the ANG (here in Wyoming). He says it was the second best decision he ever made after marrying his wife of 37 years. He retired just a few years ago as a Chief Master. I have a neighbor who’s just earned her bronze oak leaves, and I work on the rodeo committee with a Herc driver. All seem to enjoy their careers in the ANG. I think your daughter, and you and your wife, will be happy with the decision.

Sounds like me! I spent three years active duty in the Army, went to college under the GI Bill, then got smart and joined the ANG where I did 23 more years as a traditional guardsman.

Your daughter is making a good decision, she'll do fine. Congratulations!

God Bless her for wanting to serve, and God Bless you for raising her to appreciate our freedoms!

I was Communications for 20 years in the USAF (active duty), but I always thought being a “gas passer” would be a cool job. Really any flying job would be cool (loadmaster, etc.). Hope she gets the boomer job.

Best of luck to her!

I did nearly 22 years in the NY Air Guard, full time, and wish I'd done more. The Guard has always risen to fulfill the mission and the opportunities are endless for education and adventure.

Good on her!

Thank you all. She is excited, and nervous, all to be expected. We are very proud of her.

It was kind of a surprise to mom and me. We always had some military in our families and I have many friends and co workers that are in the guard, both army and air. She is a hell of a softball player. We had schools emailing, calling, writing letters, etc... for her. She then met some recruiters at school and talked to her religion teacher(catholic school) who just retired from this guard unit after about a million years in it. He was really the catalyst that put it in motion. She told me one night that even if she got a softball scholarship it wouldn’t cover as much as the Air Guard and she felt she would get something a whole lot more out of the service.

I got to fly in a tanker on a refueling flight mission from MAFB in NJ some years ago. It is a very interesting and challenging career. She will enjoy it. Good Luck!
