Marjorie Taylor Greene was victim of 'swatting' at Rome residence, police confirm

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. - The Rome Police Department said Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was a victim of a swatting attack early Wednesday morning in Floyd County.

Police said officers responded her home at around 1 a.m. after someone reported someone being shot multiple times, but determined that the call was a prank when they arrived. It's not clear how many officers responded.

Swatting is the act of making a hoax call to 911 to try and draw responses from law enforcement. Suspects can use technology to make it appear that the emergency call is coming from the victim's phone and the situations it can be deadly.

Police said a second caller using a digitally-altered voice said they were upset about Greene's views on transgender youth rights. About a month after taking office, Greene put an anti-transgender rights placard outside her Washington D.C. office across from a transgender flag raised by her neighbor, Illinois Rep. Marie Newman. The sign said, "There are TWO genders: MALE & FEMALE" and "Trust The Science."

In a tweet sent shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, the Georgia lawmaker says that she was swatted just after 1 a.m. and promised "more details to come."

"I can’t express enough gratitude to my local law enforcement here in Rome, Floyd County," Greene tweeted.

Greene is not the only Republican lawmaker in Georgia to say they've been a victim of swatting. In July, former gubernatorial candidate Kandiss Taylor said she and her family were victims of a swatting call.

Calling the incident "traumatizing," Taylor said someone had called police and falsely claimed that someone had been murdered at her home.

"I don't care what political party you are - this is evil. This is not OK. And I will find out who swatted my house. And I will do everything in my power to bring them to justice," she said.

The Rome Police Department Criminal Investigation Division and Capital Police are investigating.

It does say something when people such as myself just read that part and just go on by without reacting until someone like you point it out.

It's like pointing out to someone, "You know you just stepped on some bullshit there, buddy?" and they were unaware.

"SWATTING" is attempted murder and should be prosecuted as such.

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on Thursday that she was the subject of a "swatting" at her home in Rome, Georgia, for the second time in two days.

"Swatted again last night," she wrote on Twitter.

In a statement shared on Twitter by Fox 5 Atlanta reporter Claire Simms, the Rome Police Department said that officers responded to a call at Greene's home shortly before 3am on Thursday, saying that the call was "received on what appeared to be a suicide crisis line."

"This is an active investigation and no further information can be released at this time," read the release.

US Capitol Police declined to comment on the incident, citing long-standing policy. "For safety reasons, the USCP does not discuss potential security measures for Members or any potential investigations," said a spokesperson in a statement to Insider.

On Wednesday, Greene was the victim of the first apparent "swatting" — a form of harassment in which someone calls law enforcement to report a false threat in order to summon armed police to their home. The tactic is highly dangerous, as police may respond with aggressive force and have little way of telling whether or not it's a hoax.

According to the Rome Police Department, officers responded to a call shortly after 1am on Wednesday morning claiming that someone had been "shot multiple times" at Greene's home. Police also said that in a second call, the suspect used a computer-generated voice to say that they were "upset about Mrs. Greene's political view on transgender youth rights."

Last week, Greene filed legislation that would classify providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth under 18 as a felony, and has been heavily promoting the bill on social media. Greene has a history of targeting the transgender community, including spreading a baseless rumor in July blaming a nationwide tampon shortage on transgender people.

Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois — generally critical of Greene's far-right politics and her fealty to former President Donald Trump — wrote on Twitter that the suspect in the first incident "should be prosecuted," saying that he was the victim of "swatting" twice in 2012.

Greene's office has not responded to a request from Insider for further information about the incident.

Exactly right, this was the net result of the Call of Duty swatting in ~2017 loosely from memory. In that case ~Wichita police killed an innocent man, rather than the intended Call of Duty opponent who was the intended swatting victim.

The left have resorted to trying to ruin police officers lives and killing ideological opponents by placing them in dangerous gun play scenarios!

We need to see some serious prison terms for people that do this, and preferably federal level cases (at least preferable to CA prison sentencing standards...). I imagine many of these cases are occurring across state lines.

Major. Prison. Time. As in, measured in decades.

My opinion Marjorie Taylor Greene needs to reintroduce or push The Andrew T. Finch Memorial Act of 2018 and change and update it to 2022 since this now happened to her and let her colleagues know that this can also happen to them. I will bet it will have more traction and go through easier. God Bless

I don’t disagree with you but that makes it worse somehow for me. Having someone else do your bidding cause you’re too chicken shit adds a whole new level of anger to it for me.
