Looking at the things from the professionals one is looking at around $3,000 for a submersed solar powered aerator. Seems that the bigger pumps are fairly expensive and so is the self weighted air line. There is a city park here that has a 3/4 acre pond and they have a sweet self contained floating solar powered aerator. No one ever knows the details of it that I have asked and being that it is out in the middle of the pond I can’t get close enough to see all the components. But it is on a floating pallet, has a 3’x3’ solar panel, I am assuming some sort of surface pump. It is anchored and movement from the water of the surface pump seems to move the floaty raft around a fair amount but of course is limited by the anchor tether and never makes it to shore. Winter time comes and the whole thing is pulled and stored. Granted this pond is quite a bit larger than the city pond. I like the idea of 3 smaller pump setups to cover the area. Anyone done anything like this? I am googling but not coming up with too much. Also not sure what size pumps would be good and how to determine the amount of solar panel needed. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I am thinking this here may be the ticket. No batteries and auto on and off. https://youtu.be/4JSZSZR0qTU Build a weatherproof but breathable box on a floating something or other and anchored out in the middle. I know it is not 24/7 but that is not needed. I wonder what sort of service life the pumps are looking at. Anybody got an idea as to what sort of relay he is using between the pump and inverter? ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Following this because I've been interested in a solar pond fountain/aerator for my 1 acre pond. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Kind of surprised no one has done one of these. I think I will do a float something like this. Using 4 storage bins and wood. https://youtu.be/KJQZ6i8Q7jo I may use 6” PVC tube. Trying to make the smallest footprint possible to keep it light so that the water movement by the pump is able to move the float. But don’t want it to flip if it is towards the end of the tether during a big storm. Should be able to lay the panel pretty close to flat as not to create a huge winds stop but would be nice if it acted as a bit of a sail to move the float around. Then use a 100w solar panel from Amazon ($100) 120 liter per minute diaphragm air pump 90watts ($250) 12volt 150 watt inverter with the built in auto shut off circuitry like posted earlier. ($140) Rope and an anchor Should be about $600 per aereator. Based upon how much I can get them to move I may only need 2. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Thank you Very little |
$3K isn't out of range, we have a smaller pond at the front of the subdivision, the original fountain/lights IE pump aeration device was way too big for the pond, worked put a massive spray into the air but it was showing it's age. Replaced it with a new one, half it's size because annual repair costs on the old one was generating an expense equal to buying a new unit every 3 to 5 years. I believe we were in the $2500 range when done and that was about 10 years ago..

For the floaty things...those foam filled black plastic dock floats might be a good choice...they come in several sizes and from the number of docks and marinas locally that use them, they seem to be long lasting... This is just a website that might give you some ideas... http://www.dockbuilders.com/dock-floats.htm ******************************************************** "we've gotta roll with the punches, learn to play all of our hunches Making the best of what ever comes our way Forget that blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition Plowing straight ahead come what may And theres a cowboy in the jungle" Jimmy Buffet

We've had a floating dock on those black plastic floaty things - 22 years and still going strong. ------------------ SBrooks
