Security camera - outside at night
I have some external security cameras. I just let them record motion when detected. I spot check the footage occasionally; usually it’s like watching paint dry. But once in awhile I’ll see cool things. Like I’ve seen what I think are falling stars. Lights that drop from the sky and then disappear. Makes me wonder how frequent these events are.

Other times, it’s a little spooky. Like it thinks it detected some motion and will try to outline the area with a box. But I can’t see anything. At night, it seems like it’s seeing something I can’t see, like a ghost. It even thinks it’s tracking motion - the empty box moves across the screen.

Do you guys see falling stars captured on your security video? How often do they occur?

I see a few Wyze cameras around a couple of buildings in my world. One in particular is staring at a front entry, essentially watching for guests and deliveries. We heard the chime go off yesterday and took a look -- the camera reported seeing a vehicle on the porch. (Eek!)

What we actually saw was quickly changing shadows on the concrete -- the wind was blowing hard, and the shadows cast by the large tree aside the entry were getting the motion sensor's attention.

We haven't yet seen falling stars, but we do see small bugs flitting around in the infrared light. Big Grin
I've seen birds wrestling, and watched a small rabbit playing.

I've worked nights for almost 20 years. I see events like this probably every couple months. It's kind of neat.

Vivint cameras here, we get false positives semi-often, but usually during the daytime.
Luckily, we only have alerts on the doorbell, the others see motion almost constantly.

Don’t forget that anything will trigger motion; insects flying by, tree branches and leaves moving with wind. It’s not just large objects and people.

Mostly just something... dust or insects reflecting the infrared lights....

I turned my motion detection off. I get thousands of pictures of bugs otherwise. It still picks up anything that moves. I see a cat quite often that I have never seen during the day. My camera will tell me if it’s a vehicle, animal, person or even a package so it’s pretty cool. If I look at the list and see an animal or person at night I will check it out without having to look at the neighbors coming and going.

Depends on how good the motion sensing technology is.
I have some newer Amcrest cameras with human detection and it surprisingly good at cutting out the false activations.

My Ring Doorbell thingy records the black bear that checks out our neighborhood occasionally. Usually an hour or two before sunrise. He (not sure of the bear's pronouns) lumbers past the front door, maybe couple feet from the door.

We are not rural. This is a suburban gated community, houses on either side of me are closer than twenty feet from my house.

Best I can do is raccoons at the trash can and once a coyote.
