Three concerts have come this way that I've wanted to see with either a great friend of my spouse.

But, did not pay their $90.00 ticket prices because I knew they were going to be way too loud for out 65, 68 and 81 y.o. ears

No, they great at that volume in the 70's - late 80's

But we are old now,
As are the bands that we want to see.

They need to adjust the decibels to accommodate the old farts.

Loud was for the young ,rebel, Unstoppable.

Watching ZZTop with foamy ear plugs was a big let down.

Boz Scaggs did it perfectly.

Try Etymotic ear plugs. Check their website (www.etymotic.com). The "passive" Eta-Plug costs $14 for a pair, or $25 for 2 pair, and cut the sound level by 20 db, without affecting the fidelity like the foam plugs do. I'm a professional musician, and use them all the time when I am playing in an orchestra (especially if I'm right in front of the percussion, trumpets, or trombones) or big band.

Besides that, Frank Sinatra don't do concerts no more.

Since you are a Grandpa the orchestra is not loud. I am sure Iowa has one as well as Chicago. Gotta dress up though.

I quit going to concerts in the late 70s or early 80s. I thought the concept of going to a concert was to hear the preformer(s) not the thousands of other people thinking they can sing just as good. That caused the volume to be cranked up to distortion levels.
I would rather buy the tape or cd of the music and listen at home.

Case in point,
Three Dog Night is appearing up in Dubuque in May.

I saw them fifteen years ago. One member at least has died. They were not loud in a fifty person venue.

Well that's encouraging.

I've been wearing foam earplugs to concerts for many years, but I'm sure my hearing was damaged by concerts I attended in my youth. David Lee Roth with Steve Vai in the 80s was the loudest. I find no issue hearing the music just fine.

Funny anecdote: Mrs. AUTiger89 and I were in Nashville a few weeks ago to see Blackberry Smoke at the Ryman. On the drive there, I mentioned I would love to see David Cook sometime. Two days later, we were walking around downtown Franklin, and who was playing that night at the downtown theater? David Cook. We didn't go (we were also visiting my parents), but decided to catch him in Charleston this summer.

My wife & I used to be big concert goers. Over the years we saw the Stones, Bad Co, ZZ Top, Steve Miller, Bob Seeger, just about all the classic rock bands from the 70's & 80's. And alot of the Southern Rock bands like Molly Hatchet, Outlaws, Blackfoot, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd several times, etc. But after seeing some of our favorite old bands recent tours on YouTube, we've decided that maybe it would be better to just remember them the way they were.

I sat 2nd row at Steve Vai last year, when I met him.
The volume required no ear plugs (even though I wear custom baffles anyways).
I am surprised I am not deaf now from all the metal I have seen since 1980.....

Eric Clapton was also ear friendly.

Another thumbs uo for Etymotic or similar "musician" earplugs.

These plugs carry a lower rating for reducing the volume because they let in more high frequencies than regular foam plugs. The rating system is biased to reduce highs more than mids and lows. Thus the foam plugs give a muffled sound. Musician plugs give a clear sound. I can understand conversation at a loud concert better when wearing them than when not wearing them, and the music is better when not crushingly loud.

Pretty much the same thing plus I'm not going to pay those ridiculous ticket prices.

I did break down and go see John Petrucci earlier this year and it was fantastic, he is not an old school rocker but it was not too expensive and the sound was incredible.
I might go if the venue and the artist were right - did go see Stevie Winwood a couple years ago because wife and I have never seen him and did enjoy that one.
But agree we pretty much quit going as the value and quality is just not there anymore.
Inflation and aging has taken it's toll.

The Cowsills are still doing shows and sound damn good

Not a concert but we were recently on a Princess cruise for a week, I loved it. The median age had to be 70, the ship was a ghost town after about 9pm and the shows were pretty low key and not loud
