Tennessee passed a similar law. I haven't noticed a difference.

We have had a similar law in Texas for a while. I've rarely seen or heard of it being enforced.

Great idea but it'll never be enforced.

I guess I should have added, will it be enforced?

Finally. NC has the weakest left lane law in the region.

They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

Whether or not it's enforced - the fact that the law is on the books will reinforce what people who drive for a living say every. single. day. "If you're not gonna go fast, get out of the fast lane!!!" The sign does NOT read:

"Slower traffic keep right, unless you're already going the speed limit."

It doesn't say:

"Slower traffic keep right, unless you feel that you're going as fast as anyone else should go."

No, what it does say is:

"Slower traffic keep right."

What does that mean, though?

It means no matter how fast you're going, if someone is riding your ass in the far LEFT lane, you need to KEEP RIGHT.

Of all the enemies the American citizen faces, the Democrat Party is the very worst.

Yeah I live in NC, and the tail gating is the worst here. I'm in the right lane and you want to ride my bumper to the point I can't even see your headlights? Go the F around me, there's an open left lane. But no, people would rather sit right behind you and flash their lights, etc. Sorry buddy, I'm already going over the limit and it's a multi-lane road, use the "passing lane" and go around me.

And that has absolutely nothing to do with this bill, but I feel your pain nonetheless.

I'll say this about drivers in Europe concerning driving in the left lane...they know better. It's rarely a problem because it's actually enforced and actually taught to driving students.

So what's the plan? Give everyone a speeding ticket in when they go in the left lane? You know dang well the overwhelming majority of those wanting to pass in the left are speeding.

If I had to drive Interstate 40 from Hickory to Morganton every day (about 20 miles), I'd either have a stroke or be in jail. The drivers there are awful.
Drivers in the left lane doing 65, texting or watching videos as they drive, and oblivious to anyone or anything else around them. UNTIL you go around them in the right hand lane, then they get pissed and speed up. It's happened to me many many times.
Just a week ago I was on the motorcycle and a girl texting and driving about ran me into the guardrail as I passed her.
I've come close to wrecking more times on that stretch than anywhere else I've driven regularly.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Not NC (Va).

There are no interstate hwys near me, most of my daily driving on primary routes are 4 lane divided hwys.

Left lane stragglers are really bad in my region.

This is nothing more than a NY move.....it's a money grab. They said it themselves in the article that there's a law already in place but this one would slap on a monetary $200 charge. Sens. Jeff Tarte, Tom McInnis, and Jim Davis must be transplants from NY.

This is the greatest ever! Most congestion is caused from idiots not following the law. Left lane = passing lane. It works great for Germany.

Anyway, isn't there a similar traffic law already on the books in most States? I thought "Failure to Keep Right" was always a ticketable offense. I know for a fact anyway that it's on the books in New Jersey.

I've seen it happen a handful of times here in NJ. It's always a statie that pulls the slow non-passing guy over that is hogging up the left lane.

If you get in the left lane then you pass quickly and safely and get back over to the right. If you don't want to exceed the speed limit then stay out of the left lane.

Is it legal to exceed the speed limit by a certain MPH for a certain distance to pass?

So hard for some to understand.

Are you one of those "never sped in my life" types? A well known sect of the "never jaywalked in my life, but if I did I'd surrender to POlice?"

Nope. Just seems odd to ticket people to be ticketed for driving under for the benefit of those going over.
