I don’t think I want a reverse osmosis system, since they seem to waste a lot of water. I’m thinking a three filter system might work. Trying to get educated on these to make a correct choice, and would like to know if anybody here has feedback on their experiences with them.
Which brands seem to work? Which to avoid?

What is the source water (contaminated well, clean well, city water) and what are you trying to do/ get out of it?

That will be the first step to deciding what system you need.

Water here sucks, both in taste and "stuff" in it. I went with this simple three filter model under sink and it's worked great to correct those issues.

APEC WFS-1000

We have a simple, single canister, undersink Culligan that my wife bought at least 20 years ago, maybe longer. It is still working fine, with occasional replacement of filter cartridge.

The primary benefits that I notice:

• it tames the chlorinated taste of city water
  
  
• No (or maybe minimal) sludge build-up in the little orifices in the Keurig coffee maker.

I have the APEC unit like the one above, except I went with the model with reverse osmosis ability. No complaints in over 7 years.

Our water is pretty clean and city suplied.

Replace cartridges about every six months
A common issue is that the battery to remind you to replace the cartridges ends up getting corroded. Otherwise no issues, I set an alarm on my iPhone to go off every six months.

I spent the extra money because I like the idea of filtering out the pharmaceuticals.

We have a reverse osmosis with a uv unit that works great. We have our own well for water which is pretty bad. We only use the RO for drinking and coffee and to the fridge. Of course the RO unit has its own faucet in kitchen and bath. Also have an iron removal unit and a water softener before the RO unit. I know this is not what you asked but a RO unit will not waste that much water if only used for drinking.

I have two water sources, well water and Co-op (essentially “city water”). The current house is on well water, but the new house being built will be on Co-op water at least for a while. The undersink filters will be for the new house.

I’ve been looking at that one.

All of the 3 filter systems are about the same, they generally have a 25 micron and then a 5 or 10 micron pleated paper filter and then a 2-5 micron granulated carbon filter (for chemicals/minerals). Most of them use the same filter elements, but make sure to get a brand that the filter elements are readily available. 10" filter housings are very common and easy to get filters for.

Jeff at pure earth has the best prices and all the various systems with good technical data. I have used his systems since the early 90's.

Been using E-Spring carbon block undersink filter for years. Pricey but worth it.

I'll check when I get home, but ours has been good so far. Was installed by the previous owner.
I think it's a DuPure system, as it was serviced by the same tech that fixed the water softener shortly after we moved in.

3 filter undersink setup with an RO tank, fed to a separate sink-mounted dispenser.

Great advice here. Some of the systems mentioned I have read about, some I have not but will make it a point to research them all.
I need to decide soon and get them ordered do the plumber can put them in.

It has always been my understanding and belief that the water sources need to be tested then addressed with the proper filtering needs to correct any issues.

The Co-op provides reports on contaminants, and it’s always in violation of one or more. I’m keeping those results in mind when shopping.
Well water was recently tested, no surprise there, it’s heavy on the minerals.
