Got a couple of pieces of mail today for somebody who I don't know and has never lived at my address (bought the house from original owner). They appear to be from another state after a cursory internet search. My address is not something you would pull up randomly, the cable company can't even find my address even though I have service. I have to give them an old street name for them to be able to find my house for a service call. Many delivery drivers and service providers have a hard time finding my house. My zip code normally comes up for the town next to mine, which is about 30,000 people. My town has about 2000. So I'm pretty perplexed how somebody would have come up with my address to assume. I'm going to let the post office know and write on the envelopes that the person doesn't live here. Some folks say to let the police know. I will check my credit reports, I've had them locked for quite a while. I'm trying to figure out their angle and whats coming next. Has this happened to you and what do you think I ought to do? Thanks in advance.

I just wish, after 6 months, I'd stop getting mail for the extended family that appears to have resided in my house prior to us. We get mail from the couple we bought it form, along with 5 or 6 other people, plus the seller's business. We RTS [Return to Sender] a lot of it & toss the obvious junk mail. I received mail for two complete strangers, none of whom ever lived at our residence. We determined, after speaking to our next door neighbor who was the realtor, that the individuals in question viewed the house prior to our purchase. Their information went into a database that made the connection between our property and their names. The mailing only occurred after the local realty was purchased by a larger conglomerate, who probably sold the viewers info to a third party. Given CRM databases these days I wouldn't read too much into receiving mail addressed to someone other than you, if it's the non-confidential kind and it's only limited to a few pieces of mail. Letting the USPO know is the right way to go.

I have gotten several credit cards for someone else. They came in a large envelope and were left on my front porch. I always thought somebody would come along after dark to pick them up and then run up some charges and not pay but I don't know.

A friend started getting mail like that a few years ago with a stranger's name on it. Then stopped getting mail because the stranger filed a change of address for the household. Her identity was stolen and several accts set up in her name with all the bills going elsewhere. Be careful.

"Return to Sender, Forwarding Address Unknown" I bought a stamp which said that to use because the ex refused to change her address(es) and used it as an excuse to randomly drop by. Mail delivered to my address that's not for me gets shit canned. If its miss delivered then it gets given back to the carrier. But we have owned this home since 1983 so don't see much mail that doesn't belong to use. See some advertising or junk mail in the kids name from time to time but nothing they need.

Are you certain it’s not just some junk mail that they addressed to some random name but your mailing address? I’ve seen that before, it goes right into the trash.

It does appear to be junk mail. One looks to be a solicitation for car warranty since vehicle information is visible on the outside of the envelope. The other seems to be a solicitation for some type of annual medical screening. I will put them back out tomorrow and keep an eye out for more. Just seems pretty odd to show up out of the blue. If you mylife the name it shows my street as one of his former addresses, but know for a fact nobody by that name has ever lived here.

I've been in my house for three months now. I get a lot of mail - and packages - for some guy and his wife who were not the previous owner. My best guess is that the previous owner was renting the place to them. They're still ordering shit online and not bothering to update their shipping address. Two weeks ago I got a call from the realtor; she said the guy had called her agency and asked them to ask me to leave an expected package out on the porch for him to come by and pick up. I did, and two weeks later it's still sitting there along with another one that showed up three days ago. Too weird. I'm about ready to call the police and ask them to look into it.

Yup. And you likely will continue to get them until the day you croak. Been nearly 20 years, and previous owner still has his junk mail delivered here. Q

Wait, what? |
We still get mail from time to time from the previous owners…from 17 years ago. They are still in town, and for about 5 years we would take them by their business (insurance agent) and drop them off. All we get from them now is junk mail which gets tossed into recycling. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

I occasionally get mail at my address for a distant relative (4th cousin) who shares my surname. He never lived at my address. I used to forward them to him but haven't done so in a while. (Also haven't received any.) flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth
