Giant rubber band on truck wheels
Would somebody please tell me what these giant rubber bands on these truck tires are? They don't appear elastic like, but they have the appearance of a rubber band. But, as you can tell, are not stretched over the lugs. I'm not even sure what keeps them on. All the wheels had them though...

Looks like some sort of retaining ring for hub/lug covers.

It looks like that to me, too, but I've never seen anything like that. It might be something jury-rigged because the cover keeps loosening.

It's a covid thing. For lug nuts.

Not stretchy. It's rigid nylon. Keeps the lug nuts from rotating.

It's a loose wheel nut indicator.

Edit: Ah, Aetocles got it before me.

Helps get better mileage. Seriously I think it's someone just goofing to make people scratch their heads OR they've had an issue with someone tampering with the lugs and they put them there to check that. Almost looks like romex.

Haven't seen that gadget yet.
I see plenty of the green and orange triangle loose nut indicators.
After popping the nut at 450 ft lbs I haven't seen one loosen on it's own yet if the wheels are in good condition and not cracked.
I have seen them come off from not being tightened correctly though.

I'm swinging by Kroger to get some of those asparagus rubber bands, put them on the Porsche and see who can figure that out!

And thanks - stumped my gearhead friend who knows everything. No seriously, not just in his head, he really does. Well, now.
