You are very right Para, and I don’t say that to trade barbs with anyone, I say that because I felt that same way to a certain extent before I decided to try to do something about it. Before I left ATF I reported unethical behavior that was in violation of ATF and DOJ policy and federal law, to my management, ATF internal affairs, and Justice OIG. Management decided to retaliate, and then double down on their behavior. Internal affairs covered management’s ass, while DOJ OIG didn’t feel like the violations met their investigative thresholds. It was quite disheartening. I reported these issues to the Office of Special Counsel and they continue to have an active investigation, but still I couldn’t be a part of what was going on and can only hope that they’re going in the right directions. I talked to Senator Grassley’s office several times and they were nice, and definitely interested in what I had to say. I actually traveled to Washington DC and met with the Senator’s staff and provided documents that they were very much interested in. I believe Senator Grassley is still working on multiple things against ATF, but I was so disappointed that we didn’t take back the senate in November which unquestionably makes his job harder. After I left ATF I felt incredibly depressed and disheartened that they were still continuing to operate outside the law. The NY Field Division SAC actually did a work around of the Tiehart Amendment such that firearm tracing data was shared amongst law enforcement all over the state. The field division hired an attorney to do nothing but defend the agency against complaints that occurred only out of the NY Field Division and nobody questions why so many people are coming forward to report wrongdoing. It was very easy to feel defeated until I decided to run for sheriff myself. Since I’ve entered the political realm I have become so proud that I’m at least trying to do something. It hasn’t been easy. As a political outsider I’ve been told numerous times that I needed to wait my turn, while I watched the inner circle put forward an unqualified candidate. Again I’m fighting back, and I’m getting an audience. More people are starting to listen to what I have to say. If I win election I’ll have even more of an audience, and will be at the table with other leaders and have the ability to point out the illegality of certain policies and be able to show more of the unethical behavior. I’ll be able to decide that my agency will not cooperate with overreaching actions on the part federal or state executives. There’s no guarantee that I’ll win, in fact I’d say my chances of securing the Republican nomination outside of me winning the lottery are slightly less than 50/50. However I have felt great that I’m at least doing something. My wife has avoided politics her whole life, but she’s right by my side and proud of what we are trying to do. It’s wonderful to be able to look in the mirror and know that you at least tried. I say that to encourage people that have felt as I did, to do something about it. Start getting involved in your local party committees. Try running for office. Volunteer to help candidates that you like and believe in, and/or are opposing candidates that you are opposed to. It’s not guaranteed to work, but I can tell you from experience that you will at least feel a little less powerless. And give thanks to Senators like Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and Chuck Grassley. I know that I had a warm feeling watching those verbal beatings of the AG.
