I always thought it was a tax on people who don’t understand statistics, but I really can’t argue with either one of you gents.

With luck like that, he should buy a lottery ticket.

There are different ways of hitting the lottery. Quiet house, hot coffee, stretched out on couch. Lottery top prize.

Got my mandolin back from Pat DiBurro of Exeter NH. New frets; perfect job. Lottery top prize.

I do buy when the numbers get up to $400-500m.

my mother has a friend that was a constant Pick 3 and Pick 4 player,

for a couple years she actually won more than she spent,

then she just stopped all together,

wife and I play a few dollars on the powerball etc when the money gets stupid high,

never won more than 5-10 bucks,

as far as scratchers, when I used to run a grocery store out in the sticks, some mornings I would take all the discarded scratch cards (in the trash can by the vending machine) and run them thru the lotto scanner,

scratch addicts usually know where to scratch to see if they won,, some did not apparently and I would find $10 or so in tickets in the discards,

bought the morning crew breakfast a few times

I might buy a lottery ticket a couple of times a year, and I don’t recall the last time I bought one. The whole lottery thing could disappear and I’d not even notice.
There are, however, some things to understand about what the lottery is and isn’t.

First, it’s not a tax. If we are subject to a tax, we don’t have any choice about paying it. No one will seize my house or garnish my wages if I don’t buy a lottery ticket. Calling it a tax is simply a form of smug virtue signaling that allows us to demonstrate our intellectual superiority and displeasure that other people do things that we don’t like to do.

The lottery is also completely egalitarian and unbiased. I don’t have to pay more for a lottery ticket because I make more money than someone else, and my chances of winning aren’t enhanced or diminished by what sex I am, what color my skin is, what my name is, how smart I am, how attractive I am, how old I am, or who my father is. My mother can’t guarantee that I’ll win by finding the right person to bribe. The person who buys a lottery ticket knows that regardless of how unlikely it is she will win, her chances are just as good as—and no worse than—anyone else’s. Of how many other endeavors in life can that be said?

And what else are lotteries? For most people they are a form of entertainment, just as are the countless other things that we spend time and money doing. How is buying a losing lottery ticket more of a waste of money than watching a movie or sports event? For a few dollars people can imagine who they might help, the causes they could support, and the otherwise unaffordable things they could buy and what they could do with them. Will they probably be disappointed? Sure, but who hasn’t been disappointed by a sports team or their own failures to achieve a goal? Disappointment is part of life, and for the regular lottery player, it won’t be surprising or traumatic.

Some people do of course spend money on lotteries that they should be spending on something else, but let’s see a show of hands: How many of us never do things we shouldn’t spend time, effort, or money on? Yeah, I thought so.

Do we ban alcohol because of alcoholics or drunk drivers? Do we ban certain types of food because of obesity? Do we ban motorcycles because they are more dangerous to ride than driving a car? Don’t like lotteries, don’t play them, but leave the other people alone and be careful that what we object to doesn’t say more about ourselves than others.

an old man told me that your chances of winning the lottery goes up dramatically if you buy 1 ticket... not so much after that

"Tax on the poor" is a liberal talking point. Taxes are mandatory, lotteries are voluntary. (Except for selective service, but you gotta be old to remember that.)

I won't post a link but my state offers Lottery play online.

No longer need to go to the 7-11 store to play.

Wisconsin members need to find their old tickets and check them, seems that there is a $50,000 winning ticket that has not been turned I.

I’ll buy one every now and then when the amount is crazy high. The sad reality is that we could play every state lottery there is, every day for a thousand years and still not win the big one.
