I just bought a used Browning A-Bolt Medallion, 7mm Rem Mag, 26" Barrel, without a scope.

I have the same rifle in .30-06 and have had it since the early 1990's. It's an accurate rifle and I've always deer hunted with it. Lately, I've been reading about the 7mm Rem Mag and I would like to give it a try.

Now I'm gonna need another rifle scope, and more ammo...

The 7mm Rem mag is a great cartridge. One of my favorites. It is a very versatile hunting rd.

Congrats.

I am going on my first elk hunt this year. Usually shoot a .30-06 for Mule deer but upped to a Weatherby Vangard in 7mm Remington Magnum that my son-in-law gave me.
My handloads with 160 Nosler Partitions can get 1¼" 4 shot groups at 100 yards.

Now just waiting for snow to move the herds to my area (have cow/calf permit).

Any rifle scope recommendations?

What’s the budget ? Schmidt and bender ? Or more realistic ?

I’m biased. All my scopes are Leupold. American made and a repair policy and customer service that is legendary. From .22’s on up even an old m8 fixed 3 on a 44 mag rifle. From bottom end to higher end. I would recommend a 3-4x to 10-15x in their various lines. Depending what feels ok to you and distances you plan to max out at. 7mag can stretch several hundred yards. My biggest scope is 4.5-14. Most are old school 3-10. Most of mine are VXII or VXIII. The new ones VX6 ? I think makes a 4-18.

I think Leupold would be great. The max distance would probably be around 500 yards. Most deer are killed at under 200 yards in Missouri but I've once taken one at about 400 yards. But if I were to travel to Wyoming or something... who knows?
I do have access to a 500 yard range.

i like used scopes.

Swafa
Zeiss
Nikon
Meopta
Trijicon
Leupold
Older are fine. Redfield, Weaver etc.

I do not worry about magnification too much.
That is probably a fairly heavy rifle. So a light scope and mount would be a good thing.

My favorite is a 2-7. 3-9 or 10 is good also. While 4-12 is good too, not my favorite.

Don't over think the scope. Should be able to find one around $250

Leupold is all I own. Agree with the quality and warranty if ever needed. Work up some good handloads and go have some fun!

Duplex reticle 4.5x-14. $500. Fancier reticle is more. I’d be more than happy with this. I’m also not a fan of ginormous objective lenses. 44 would be my personal max. 40 is better, in my opinion.

^^^ That looks like a really nice scope.
Although the 4-12x40 might be enough.

I have a formula for optics. What did you spend on the rifle? Spend that on the optics. This might not be practical for everyone. Some have miles of open range and others have only a hundred yards. But this formula works for me +\-

Don’t forget rings and get a base if needed. leupold 1 piece base is solid. Depends on your rifle of course if it takes a one or not. Most do. There’s more expensive but I’ve been happy with leupold rings. Post Pics when you’re all set up!

My Abolt SS in a .300 wsm was my favorite mulie/ elk gun in Colorado. Very accurate and weather proof. 7mm is good out to 500 yards. Good luck. You can replace the trigger spring easily if you want a lighter pull. Had the top of the line Nikon scope on it(Black replaced it). Put a good scope on it, leupold, Zeiss etc

Have your fillings checked before shooting.

I haven’t been interested in hunting for a long time, but a few thoughts:

Long range big game hunting shots seem to have become more common in recent times for a number of reasons. When I first got interested, 300 yards was considered an exceptional range to shoot at something like a deer. With the availability of much better rifles, factory (and handloaded) ammunition, supported shooting methods, and, to a degree, scope sights, I believe that’s no longer true. Assuming, of course, that the hunter is skilled and conscientious enough to take advantages of those benefits.

And because that assumption is not always the case, that has probably led to more emphasis in the community on “ethical” practices.

Regarding scopes, the advances in features have exploded in recent years, or at least if we consider such things as better glass, larger maintubes and objective lenses, greater magnifications and ranges, and more reliable tracking to be advances. At their upper tiers those things come at costs, though, and are they really necessary for most big game hunters? I believe they aren’t, and my opinion is based on what I know about hunting, not some secret envy of the people who can afford top level scopes. I have those scopes myself, thank you, but I realize that they’re not necessary for most practical purposes.

I like Leupold scopes and the variety of models available makes it possible to fill almost any niche. I won’t get into my opinion about the motivations of people who love to hate the brand, but the company continues to offer excellent warranty service if it ever comes to that. I’m not sure where all the bargains are that one “can find if you look,” but Leupold’s warranty isn’t limited to the original owner.

The one thing I specifically recommend, though, is a good calibrated reticle that allows precise aiming hold-overs when hunting and shooting at various distances. The invention of the old “duplex” type design was a good advance over the simple crosshair, but it’s nothing close to having a reticle with clearly-marked stadia in minutes of angle or milliradians. And I’m not a fan of “bullet drop compensating” (BDC) reticles that are calibrated for specific ammunition loads. On the other hand, IMO there’s no need for the super complex reticles that some scopes offer, and they can actually be a handicap.

Precision rifle competitors usually dial the elevation settings of their scopes for different distances, and that’s certainly possible when hunting if one has time for that, but in addition to being a little slower, it also demands that the elevation adjustment tracking is exactly repeatably correct.

Anyway, congratulations on a fine acquisition. I owned a Ruger 77 in 7mm Remington Magnum for many years and I always thought it was a superior cartridge for many uses.
