What happened to Ann Landers? Ann Landers, whose real name was Esther Pauline Lederer, was a very famous advice columnist. She died of multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer, on June 22, 2002, at the age of 83. She died less than two weeks before her 84th birthday. Key facts about Ann Landers: She wrote the "Ask Ann Landers" column for 47 years, starting in 1955. At her peak, her column reached an estimated 90 million readers daily in 1,200 newspapers. She was the identical twin sister of Pauline Phillips, who wrote the popular "Dear Abby" column. She was known for her direct and engaging writing style and for addressing social issues such as women's rights and mental health. Her influence extended beyond personal advice; she is credited with contributing to the passage of the National Cancer Act of 1971. She was named the most influential woman in the U.S. by a 1978 World Almanac survey. She continued to work on her column right up until her death. Following her wishes, the "Ann Landers" column was discontinued after her death. Her daughter, Margo Howard, wrote the final "Ann Landers" column as a farewell to readers on her mother's behalf. Lederer's former editors created a spin-off column, "Annie's Mailbox," which ran until 2016. ............................. I use to read her column religiously. ![]() 41 | |||
