If it's MS-Win7 you can just go into the Windows Update settings and choose one of None, Notify, Download Only, or Automatic Update, IIRC.
If it's MS-Win10 I've no clue. Never touched it. Don't expect ever to have to.
If I may ask: Why?
ETA: Got it.
Two points: First: You're going to
have to apply updates, eventually, whether they're automatic or not. Otherwise you'll soon be at the mercy of every virus, worm, trojan, etc. that's out there. That's just the way it is and there's no way around it. Even my Linux systems and my Apple mobile devices, which I trust way,
way more than I do MS-Windows or Google Android, get updates as soon as they show up.
Secondly: Why do you need MS-Windows,
exactly? Many people only
think they have to have MS-Windows, because "everybody else" does. I'm not saying you don't, but, asking if you really do? Either a Linux variant or an Apple Mac would be far less exposed to exploit. (The Mac would be easier. The Linux variant much less expensive.)

caneau"Why" is a good question. Annoying as they are, they're quite necessary as new vulnerabilities are discovered and fixed.
The only time I'd ever recommend disabling them is if the computer is never connected to the internet.

I did that once. Actually, they called my dad, and said he had a problem, and if we didn't let them fix it they would send big burly men to our house and physically remove the computer, I then reminded him that this was America and we all have guns, and then I hung up. They never did send any big burly men to get my dad's computer... I'm starting to think they weren't actually with Microsoft...

I call BS..all you did was rearrange some things from
Red Dawn! You just changed the part about ComBloc soldiers to "big burly men" and freedom to "computer".

Phelen_KellAfaik, you can't turn it off in 10.
I will try to set my win10 machine to a metered internet connection to see if that stops automatic updates

CS200You really should take the updates; for the security patches alone it's worth it. But ultimately it's your box to do what you please and your PII info.

smschulzThe bigger problem is not keeping up with them.
The older the OS then the more there are and more time for someone to exploit and or something to go wrong.
It is one area (regardless of the OS) where "don't fix it if it ain't broke" does not apply.
YMMV

rusbroNot specifically for turing off updates, which are a necessary evil, but possibly helpful:

egregoreMost of the updates you get are at worst benign, some are beneficial.
