I helped her move from PC to MAC via phone after her PC died, using a fair backup I made a few months back. Now with her new computer, she has her files straightened out (1). A full backup on a thumb drive (2). Plus everything backed up on iCloudDrive (3). Now she's headed out to pick up a 64GB low profile thumb drive to leave in the laptop. Time Machine will perform hourly, daily, and weekly backups of all the data onto this drive (4). I'd say she is backed up out the ass.

Then you definitely aren't an IT guy ~ never have enough backups. Get complacent ~ you will be sorry. But hey something is better than nothing.

^^^ Yep.
And when that thumb drive fails, it will be (4) failures. "the meaning of life, is to give life meaning" ✡ Ani Yehudi אני יהודי Le'olam lo shuv לעולם לא שוב!

The data is bout 1.5GB total. Some pictures, a yearly budget, some medical stuff. Nothing important, like tax records. iCloudDrive backup monthly should be sufficient ... I steered her to a SanDisk compact thumb drive for Time Machine. The Apple Store folks say it should work fine. Until it fails, but between the four solid state drives, the data should be covered. I didn't say anything about her Samsung phone. Nor shall I.
