Last Sunday i finally test drove a new 2019 white miata. Drop top, 6 speed, God it felt great to row the gears again, after 4 years in a camry. It is funny, but i put off test driving for weeks and weeks, cause i know i will want it. Some reason last Sunday a bug got up my butt to do the test drive. I have owned 5 miatas in the past, my brother, being a larger guy than me, and not a miata, nor car enthusiast at all, has had mainly forgettable cars. Last Friday i get a text from him, it said "look what i have been driving for the last 24 hours". Low and behold it is a white 2019 RF miata!! WTF?!!? Well my brother had to get a rental, and that is what was on the lot. He said he loved it, but a bit to low, and his wife felt cramped in it. He lives in LA and hit a few of the canyon roads and a ride up the PCH. Funny enough that he rented a miata less then a week after i did, and with in 2 weeks of our birthday. Which is this Thursday. Yes we share a birthday, him being 6 years older than me, and we have a 2nd cousin 1 year younger than me. Crazy coincidence! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Jman78,

If I ever end up with a boring car someone have me checked out because I'm probably suffering from a stroke or something. My dad was never a car guy, drove sensible transportation, his last car was a Camry or a Corolla or whatever the medium Toyota is. I borrowed it for a roadtrip after college when I was still driving a Volvo with several hundred thousand miles on it. Yes, it was adequate, that's about the only good thing I can say about it. My daily for the last 7 years has been a Mini with a turbo and a 6 speed. Before that was the aforementioned Volvo, coffee brown wagon, AWD, beautiful leather seats and that Swedish interior was just awesome. I didn't get to pick the cars I had before that. I almost got the little Volvo hatch, but it didn't feel any faster than my V70, was a bit expensive, and the pedal placement put my knee into the steering wheel to work the clutch or brake. I couldn't do a Miata though. I can't even sit down in one, they're so small. Which is a shame, I'd love to have one, I've always loved little British roadsters and similar vehicles. I wish someone made a Miata XL that just had about 6" more windshield height and about 24" more in the wheelbase to accommodate my ass. No trunk required, and no high price tag of a real sports car.

Welcome back to the fold!!! I purchased a "gently used" 2005 Miata in 2009 with 25K miles. Since then it has become one of my favorite sports cars that I have owned. I have had numerous sports cars over my driving career including Austin Healy, 280Z, Camaros and RX-7 but I think this one is the best. It just works and is practical as well. Everything works, nothing breaks and even if it does the car repairs and maintenance are reasonable. If you think it drives great now, I put about $7K of suspension, brake and engine mods in mine. It handles like a full blown road racer but still is comfortable on the street. Best "Smiles per Mile" I have ever owned. T-Boy

Shoots Flies at Fifty Yards! |
Last year, I was reading about the "new" engine that Mazda was putting in the 2019 MX-5. So... I then went to the Mazda web site and saw the animation of the RF model opening and closing the roof. I did not even know about that model and it was three years old! I did not know about the previous folding top model either. I never paid any attention to Miatas at all. I had never even ridden in a Miata! Now, I already have the two MG's, so I have two convertible roadsters. But what I did not have was a car that can do highway speed, or year around driving or had A/C! This car checked all those boxes and more. I went spent some time on the website and configured just what version I wanted. I liked the "sport" model, but with my wife in tow for much of the rides, I decided on the RF, Grand Touring, in the Eternal Blue. Searched the local and regional dealerships and only one even had a new RF. I go down to the store and it is exactly what I wanted! Damn! Took it for a test drive... Damn! This was a fun car to drive. It is small, I 'm not so small any more, but with the seat back all the way, and the steering wheel adjusted, it fits just fine. I love my MG's. One is 69 years old and a RHD. The other is a 72 LHD MGB. But the MX-5 is in a whole other category. I am over 10K miles and it is not my daily driver! That is a 3500 diesel dually 8' bed truck. Quite a difference! I love this car!
